He insisted that the proper term was "soda." It began a conversation about diferent words for the same things. Then we started talking about how mundane and stupid our conversation had become. So, what is it, Pop, soda, or soda pop? I'm from Nebraska, and through out the Midwest I've always heard it called pop. Now I'm in North Carolina, and they call it soda. I've always called it soda. ANd that's because my best school mate was from Boston and she called it soda. If you think about it, soda is the berverage and pop is what the carbonation does. I think it was originally called soda pop. Now, you go deeper down south, and they call all soda coke.

Pop..is pop!
My dad is from Italy and not only has his English grown over the years but so has his understanding of the langauge. One time on a construction job, he was going to go to the corner store and pick up something to drink for him and some guys (pop or soda or whatever...not beer) so he asked everyone what they wanted and most people were specfic (for instance, I think my Dad and some other guy both got a Vernors, which was created in Michigan and is still realy popular here). So one guy asked for a soda. My dad had no idea so he roamed around the store and got a warm club soda, although he thought it was an odd choice. The guy had a fit!

I only really use "soda" when speaking in the general sense. But it makes me think about how brand conscious we've become! Marketers are squeeling with glee somewhere. For instance, when it's place where they give you a cup (Subway...any fast foodish place where you order inside and they have a machine), I say I want a pop, and they understand (but then again, I barely leave Michigan).

Vernors, is arguably the best ginger ale in America.
Its so strong, spicy, and full bodied. Other ginger ales shouldnt even be called ginger ale IMO.

I made a thread about this once before. I also made one about heros, hogies, wedges, grinders, and subs.
Personally, I like to have a SODA with my HERO. "You need people like me so you can point your fuckin' fingers and say, "That's the bad guy." "

Here it is mainly referred to as Coke, even when talking about other items.
Only then does the brand make a difference between what is actually being consumed. Such as paint thinner.

To me, soda means just bubbly gassy kinda water
Pop always makes me think of a popsicle So I think Soda Pop for me would involve both.

As a New Englander by birth, I call it "soda." Here in Seattle, it seems that both terms are used and understood. OTOH, I got some strange looks in the Chicago area when asking, "What kinds of soda do you have?" Please note: effective March 21, 2010, I've stepped down from my prince.org Moderator position. |

So, what is it, Pop, soda, or soda pop? [Edited 4/22/05 9:59am] What's interesting is that the local paper here recently had an article about this very subject. It talked about how different locations in the US call it different things. We also call it "pop" here, while down in the south, they call it "Coke" whether it's Pepsi OR Coke. It's strange. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.
