Movies from "the bootleg man" How many movies have you bought from bootleg guys, quality, and does it make you not want to buy the real versions?
I bought "Ray" (VG) Passion Of Christ (G ..the screen was smashed together so every1 looked very oval..good movie though) Diary Of A Mad Black Woman (G) the screen was kinda blocky and sum of the words would cut off. 100 Black Divas X... (VG) just kinda blocky The Jacket (VG) a little dark I still want just about all these films in their real versions though. Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.

[Edited 4/18/05 11:40am] Exactly, I download them myself as well. Things I want to keep I burn onto DVD+R and everything else on DVD+RW so I can erase that crap after watching it once. The quality of DVD5 copies is usually good enough, though sometimes they really should have made it two discs instead of one. DVD9 is better of course, but unfortunately I don't have a dual layer burner yet and sometimes it's just not worth the extra download time which in my case is less than 2hrs for a DVD5.

I downloaded CONSTANTINE, THE RING 2, SIN CITY the other day. I'm going to keep them as VCD's until they come out. I'm definately purchasing SIN CITY. I haven't seen the other two yet.

back when i lived in new york, i got a few movies from the bootleg man. i used to work in the wall street area, and you could find bootleg men EVERYwhere - they'd lay the damn things out on a blanket on the ground so you'd almost trip over 'em!
the only ones i remember getting were 'blair witch project', 'phantom menace' and the south park movie, so yup - it was a while back....

All of them!
I live in Bangkok. Depends how new the movie is. I saw Kill Bill on DVD while it was still in the cinema and it was perfect, but I remember once I got LOTR The Two Towers and it was a terrible video cam job. I took it back and replaced it with Bruce Almighty I think. Anything that's already out on DVD I can get on DVD9 and they're very good. I tend to stay away from DVD5s of new movies now and just go to the cinema instead. A bootleg DVD9 movie here costs about $3.50. Of late I've tended not to bother buying bootlegs, but there was a time when I'd buy every movie ever just because they were cheap. Police have cracked down a little at Phanthip Plaza now too, but it's still the place to go. Has to be seen to be believed.

I guess I've become desensitized to it all. I couldn't imagine paying full price for a PS2 game anymore. Am I a bad person?
I buy DVDs I really love from Amazon, but wouldn't shell out $20 for a movie I just like. One thing I've grown to enjoy about living here is being able to pop down to Phanthip on the weekend and buy 3 or 4 PS2 games and a few movies that take my fancy, and usually a few will be keepers. I suppose I should be appalled, but I'm just not. [Edited 4/18/05 20:17pm]

My friend downloaded Alien Vs Predator.
It was quite a good copy apart from the fact that it was recorded in an American theater. why do you Americans insist on whooping and cheering for the slightest thing that happens on the screen? Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

Well, new in the sense that the disc is freshly burned and the cover art, box etc. are new. Yes, bootlegs are good for new movies so long as they're not video camera jobs. To be honest, I hardly buy bootleg movies anymore, although I did at one time, but rather PS2 games. Very occasionally I'll have trouble with one, but they always let you take them back and swap them. It's just become a way of life. I'm not actually sure where I'd go to get a genuine PS2 game. Even in the Tesco Lotus supermarket they sell copied PS2 games. In Malaysia they openly sell copied DVDs and games in shops in the shopping centres. Not market stalls, but permanent shops, and they're not hidden, just sat on the shelves.

Ex-Moderator | See, i've heard of this phenomenon, but never really knew anybody who would get these. When I worked at a movie theatre I had a friend who was interning at a local promotions company and he'd loan me bootlegged videos of movies that hadn't come out yet, but I wouldn't have the slightest idea where to buy them.
And since I've been with Netflix I've only purchased a few dvds period. But with their track record lately, I may be back to that. |

I got was 28 Days and some other one and they were very dark and screwed up. Ruined the movies for me and I never went to the theater or rented them.

Well there are a couple of different types of bootleg movies and they're as good as the source is. Cam jobs suck big time, so do telesyncs although they're a bit better than cams. IMO those are a complete waste of time. I only download dvd screeners and dvd pre-releases. They're both taken from DVD so the picture and sound quality is great. If done properly people won't even notice a difference.

I'd have to say it's rare here that the quality isn't very good. If you ask they'll tell you whether it's a DVD5 or 9 and whether it's a camcorder job. Obviously there's no perceptible difference between the original and a good DVD9 copy. I just don't have the interest in movies that I used to, so I've stopped buying them.
Gotta laugh at some of the typos on the cover art though. Apart from that, they look very good and usually very close to the originals. Some people might not notice the difference.

Damn I wish I had one. I could burn Ass Worship #6 (special extended 2-disc set) to one disc instead of two. Takes fucking forever though: An hour to download, an hour to burn. Plus, the dual layer blank DVDs cost an arm and a leg. But, the finished product is flawless.

So 2 hours and costs a lot for the disc? I'd rather pop down to Phanthip and pay $3.50 for a copy with full cover and disc artwork.
