A New Desperate Housewife One of my favorite actresses joining one of my favorite new shows. From E!online:
NEW NEIGHBORS: Variety reporting that Alfre Woodard is joining the cast of ABC's Desperate Housewives as a regular next season, playing a woman who moves to Wisteria Lane with her son. The veteran thespian makes her first appearance as a guest star on this season's final episode.

Correct me please if I'm wrong but this show was in " Desperate " need of Black People anyway, I've never seen one on that show ( truth is that I don't watch it anyways, so what do I know ). Can they stop selling the sex on this show and actually focus on good plots? Jeux Sans Frontiers

I agree with you, and I'm glad they're adding a black woman to the cast. Now, if she just makes and appearance now and then to wash some floors, I'm gonna throw my TV through the windows of the ABC office. And I'm glad they're not just adding a pretty young actress to the show. Don't get me wrong - I think Alfre Woodard is a beautiful and amazing actress, but they coulda added just another pretty young face with no skill to back it up. They are selling the sex on the show, but it's actually very well written. Personally, I'd compare the writing on the show to that of Six Feet Under. It's more comedic in nature, but that doesn't detract from the quality of the writing and the plot.

For what it's worth, Alfre can run circles, squares, octagons and trapezes around most of the main actresses there, but I wouldn't begrudge her doing TV, it pays just as good as her movie roles. She would be enough to get me to watch some of it next season. Jeux Sans Frontiers

The only African American character that I saw ever on the show was when Richard Roundtree (oh, yes, Shaft) appeared on several shows trying to help the husband of Mary Alice (the housewife the commited suicide and is the narrator) find out who exposed could have driven her to suicide...Then he got paid so much to threaten to person or to kill them...Not excatly a postive character. I really like Alfre Woodward and I hope she has a somewhat frequent role on the show (possibly taking over for the barely there Nicolette Sheridan).

I think they should have gotten Robin Givens (whom I love!!).
Acting chops aside, I can't see Alfre fitting into the atmosphere of Wisteria Lane. But someone like Robin or Vanessa Williams ... definitely.

I guess they're looking for some lesbian sub-plot.....

From a news report: "Woodard, according to the New York Post, will play "a deeply religious, overbearing single mother who moves to Wisteria Lane after her son gets involved in a bad situation with a girl in their old neighborhood." How cliche. So hopefully Abierman's right and she'll get to have her lesbian affair on the side also Kevin Murphy, co-executive producer of "Desperate Housewives," told the paper, "[Woodard is] one of the best actresses of her generation and to have her on the show is an incredible honor. . . Like all the rest of our women, there's going to be much more to her than initially meets the eye." but why can't black women ever be the sexy vixens on TV. I'm tired of the religious single mama roles. The strong matriarch ... the asexual protector..... I won't a vixen who can rival Teri Hatcher and Nicollete!

Well, let's wait and see what happens when she actually gets on the show. Who says she can't be deeply religious AND deeply, freakily sexual?

I think a lesbain sub-plot is too much, too soon after Brie's son came out (unless it turns out he is just acting out, which is a cop out). Slow it down and get back the bitch in the chest...what about Lynette's traveling husband's secret (affair/child with other woman, I assume)....explain stuff before moving on!

I'm thrilled to hear about this addition! She should make a fine addition to an already stellar show.
This show is one of those gems that comes around every once in a while and just grabs a hold of you. It's like a book you cannot put down. Especially with the twists and turns the show takes...I find myself screaming to the TV every Sunday night with some remark like 'Whaaaaat the Fuuuuck!' or simply laughing hysterically. The camp factor is always entertaining as hell (Gabrielle mowing the lawn in a gown, Susan and Edie's rivalry, Bree's drag queen-esque persona) I hope this show retains it's luster next season...there are just a few things I would like to see next season... -More camp! -More catty scenes between Edie and Susan...they kill me everytime (esp when Edie threw Ms. Huber's ashes at Susan's face.....LOL) -Less off-show hysterics...they are everywhere and overexposure could ruin this -NO SUPERSTAR CELEBRITY GUESTS....pulling a 'Will & Grace' and have a superstar guest every week would just kill it completley. I heard they rejected Cameron Diaz and Britney Spears requests to be on the show...good...the producers are on the right track. This show rocks! Every minute of last night is on my face today....

They've had some but mostly older more established actors (Newhart and Lelsey Ann Warren, who was on "Crossing Jordan" right after!, where both on last week). Yeah, no Britney or Cameron. That's overkill.
