alright you dog lovers out there, i have a question...

alright, everything is going FANTASTIC with the new pups woot! they are just doing wonderful here in the home nod no potty issues, which is a blessing !! no chewing issues, great !! no trash, begging for table food issues.. thats a great things as well woot! all is going great EXCEPT for one thing sigh and i dont know what to do, so, im open for ideas..

i have a cat, his name is Cody, we love him very much and we will be keeping him nod

the dogs however... have not been around cats before sigh so, they either want to KILL him or just love him to death lol either way, they BARK at the cat uncontrolably bawl i thought things would get better, and i guess they are slightly shrug but the first day, my cat reached out and snagged the girl dogs face, got her right in the eye (not the eyeball itself, but right in the area - it bled quite a bit, the kids were horrified, but its all good, we took care of it, and the dog is fine now).

the sad thing is, my cat has been under my bed now since they got here sad and i feel so bad for him disbelief i just want everyone to get along... or at the very least tolerate one another nod

how do i go about making them all happy ????

oh, these dogs, i know this plays a part in it... they are hearding dogs... so i think, i THINK that they are doing what comes natural to them. im doing the water spray method, as well as shaking a can of coins to scare them. ive been told that if you yell at them, they think its a game... they were yelling, now you are yelling.. so, they must be 'leading' you in some way shrug anywho... im up for any suggestions out there....

thanks grouphug

Time is the key. It takes some time. Also, tell the dogs that it's not allowed, put them in their place. Be their alpha leader. Unless you bark at the cat, they can't either. Don't yell at them though, then they'll think you're barking with them. Do what another dog will do, use the body language. Good luck.

You will prolly just have to keep them separated. Dogs and cats don't usually get along unless you raise them together as babies. Other than that, you will prolly have to keep them separated.

no no no! They'll learn to tolerate each other in time. That cats and dogs don't go well together is crap and an urban myth, when they learn each other's body language it's fine.

You're welcome. smile Believe me, cats can wait for days... but keep the dogs out in the yard or whatever for the day, then she can go about her business. If she doesn't then, she really only has herself to blame. wink

I had an older cat when we got our dog and our cat never really adjusted. I felt horrible. It's like having your kids constantly at odds.

I wish I could help, but I wasn't successful at all in that situation.

Your poor cat is probabbly having a nervous breakdown, lol.

I've never dealt with this situation between cats and dogs, but when we adopted our Beagle, our other two dogs HATED her and beat the shit out of her. We would keep the beagle close to us on the couch and whenever all 3 dogs were in the room together, to guard her until the other two took the hint. The squirt gun tactic works too.

SomeoneElse

My mother has both dog and cat.
The dog is new, and it seems the cat doesn't like it very much.
They keep their distance from each other. or more correctly, the dog is smart enough not to get close to the cat from hell lol
Well, actually everybody I know is smart enough not to get close to that cat lol
