my son got into a fight at school

okay this is his story: the boys were playing dodge ball. he hit a boy on the leg and the boy got mad and hit my son in the face so my son hit the boy in the face and the boy charged my son flipped the boy over and started punching him in the face, the teachers broke it up, all they saw was my son punching the boy.
now i'd like the think he didn't start this because he's very quiet and all does is his school work like he's supposed to(he's on the straight A list again). i want to tell him not to fight but i don't want him to be bullied, he's small and since he's quiet, i've seen other boys try to challenge (like men do with eachother lol )

i looking for a guys point of view of how i should approach this.

Boys will take care of it on their own.

Bottom line: Let him know you support him.

And don't get emotional in front of him--push those feelings deep deep down inside--it'll make all your dealings with the men in your life easier.

Anxiety

talk to your kid about the incident. try to understand why he was angry. try to get him to reason out loud as to why what he did was wrong, or how it could be seen as wrong. if you disapprove, you should let him know that - but also let him know that you understand how he feels, or that you WANT to understand how he feels. there's nothing worse than being angry and nobody validating your anger - it just makes your anger worse, especially if you're a kid and you haven't learned how to deal with being angry.

His silence is taken for weakness, but they now know he can hold his own in most circumstances boys will present him with. Tell your son to still be that same calm spirit and only turn into an aggressor when, and ONLY WHEN he is aggressed upon, such as today. Be proud of him and reassure your love.

I say just let it go...

If someone hit him I think it's ok he hit back.

As far as him being the silent type, all he has to do is kick one kid's ass and they will leave him alone. Then he'll be the strong silent type. smile

May sound wrong to say but I deal with kids every damn day. I know I'm right.

I agree with Dex. He did the right thing under those circumstances, but getting physical should only be used as self defense and even so it doesn't mean you have to beat the other guy to a bloody pulp. Just til he stops being a threat. Then it's time to back off and walk away.

This type of stuff is an education. One that's just as, if not more important than, what they learn in books. nod
