Anyone dig the Marx brothers? My Dad was always a fan so I grew with them with my bother and sister. As a kid, Harpo was my fav, now it's Chico. Dispite being 30's-1940's, the humour is still very funny and witty. The lines Groucho spits out are sharp as hell too. I still love Harpo, like in "duck soup" when he is making someone try on hats, nuts and lemonade ("duck soup" being their best film for me) but I gotta love Chico and that accent he has. The later MGM films (they were with Paramount at first) are not as good. Naff songs got included BUT some funny meoments still happen. Anyone else know them. Comedy owes them everything. Compared to overated and dated acts of Laurel and Hardy, Marx bros are still clever and funny. They even inspired Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and even Animaniacs. The films are classics.

Groucho: "Martha, there are many bonds that will hold us together through eternity".
Margaret Dumont: "What are they?". Groucho: "Your government bonds, your savings bonds, your liberty bonds ...".

Oh yes. I love them | |

Yeah I could quote some lines. But as a kid I watched Harpo more. Now I watch for Groucho as his lines are superb. [Edited 4/7/05 8:05am]

Yeah, thats clever shit right there. I do not think they could ever better that scene. Iam sure many shows have tried. I cannot work out if its harpo or chico either? They look so alike without their usual gear etc.....

"a night at the opera"? Does that have the scene where they read the contract and keep ripping it? That scene is such class.

There's a famous story of a meeting between Grouch Marx and the poet T.S. Eliot.
They both admired one another, so Groucho said that he spent the few days before their meeting boning up on King Lear, but when they met all Eliot wanted to do was quote lines from his movies!

Harpo innvented the "Whap!" Chico made pork pie hats cool As a kid, my fav scene ever was the one in "the big store" when they are on rollerskates. It is so slapstick. Thats what is so good. the films cater to a wide audience. I remember most of the sons they sing (the ones the crappy characters sing in the MGM ones I do not ) One goes something like "i'm against it". Thats the hook? Anyway catchy song. Groucho sings it..... Is it "duck soup" (again) that has the peanut stand scene with Chico and Harpo? Again I loved it as a kid and still do now.

Speaking of The Marx Brothers when I woke up they were showing a Marx Brothers marathon on TMC.
I didn't watch all of it but from what I saw it was hilarious. I enjoy Groucho's quick wit and delivery. I like them more than The Stooges. I believe I am going to invest in Marx Brothers films. Any suggestions which ones I should get and how many movies did they make? My name is BISCUIT...and I am funky!
