Donations! Donations! I was approached in Pittsburgh a while back from an ex of mine if I would donate my sperm to her so she could have a child. She said she'd draw up contracts and everything relinquishing my rights to be responsible for money and all contact and everything. I turned her down as I would not want the heart tugging burden of knowing I have a child and am not part of his/her life.
What are your thoughts on this?? The man who does not read good books has no advantage over the man who cannot read them. -- Mark Twain.

What are your thoughts on this?? I don't blame you...I'd imagine it would be pretty hard for you to have a child right next to you, knowing it's yours, but not being able to refer to it as "yours," and perhaps watching another man interacting with it.

I agree with your reasoning of not wanting to do it.

I'm not saying it's good or bad, but I wouldn't be able to do it either.

Ex-Moderator | Agreed.
I used to joke with a gay friend of mine that he could have my eggs if he wanted them someday. I figure, its the perfect arrangement! I could be a mother without really having to be one. Kind of like being an aunt, but better. But I don't think I could ever really do that. |

I think you made the exact right decision. I have had lesbian friends musing on me donating sperm so they could be mothers and raise the baby with their partner and I absolutely would not want any part of not being an integral part of my childs life.
Also, I think some state laws do not protect the man from having to be responsible monetarily for the child, no matter what kind of agreements are drafted beforehand. In the eyes of the state, if there is an individual to pin responsibility on, the state will, in the name of the child's rights, find that individual responsible to get them out of the obligation. In some cases, where women have gotten pregnant by someone other than their boyfriend/husband, women can collect child support for a child that does not biologically belong to the father by sheer fact that the state deems them in a legally responsible position. Depends. How much money was she offering?

I realized talked about this with a lesbian who has a child from a donor. She asked me if I'd ever consider it -- not for her, but in general. Like Dex and Supa, the answer for me is a resounding, "NO!" I would like to have children at some point, and I couldn't be an "uncle" or random stranger to my own child. Just wouldn't work for me. http://elmadartista.tumblr.com/ http://twitter.com/madartista

I agree with your thoughts, Dex. I was asked to do this many years ago for my sister's girlfriend. At the time, I was young and didn't care. Thankfully my mom was against it, so it didn't happen. (I figured if anyone in the family opposed it, it wasn't worth it.)
Just recently my sister asked me I thought my BF would give her his sperm. I said "that's sweet but HELL NOOOO!" I don't think it's that easy to just walk away. Anonymous sperm donation is different, cos you'd never really know. But having your "child" near you. I just think that would be TOO weird.
