Wasn't there supposed to be 9 Star Wars at One time?

or was that just some type of rumor?

Lukas says that he always intended 6, but you can never believe him.

Webhead

There is another trilogy after the 6th I believe. It has to do with Leia's kid I think. And Luke starts the jedi order again.

I think.

Shouldn't you be focusing on work and not on sci fi??

Yes there were originally gonna be 9 movies.

Episodes I-III - story of Anakin Skywalker / Ben Kenobi / Padme Amidala
Episodes IV-VI - story of Luke Skywalker / Han Solo / Leia Organa
Episodes VII-IX - story of Jacen Solo / Jaina Solo

The only characters to appear in all 9 movies would have been R2-D2 & C-3PO.

So why did Lukas quit?

R there books that continue the story?

I'm really new to this reinvigerated Star Wars thing.

It took too long to get Episodes I-III made (he hadn't originally intended
to leave it so long), to then embark on Episodes VII-IX as well would be too
much for him (so he thinks). He did consider it a few years back when Peter
Jackson started the Lord of the Rings trilogy, as he thought maybe he COULD
make them if he shot them back to back, but he's since decided against it.

There are many books that cover events inbetween and beyond the existing
movies, but so far no-one has been allowed to write anything set in the
timeframe of Episodes VII-IX (which many see a faint glimmer of hope that
Lucas will relent and make the final 3 movies).

I think it's just that sitting through any one of them seems like sitting through 9.

Surprised to see you here...

Lucas has left the next trilogy to his son...or at least that's what I heard.

Early on in his career, Lucas talked about nine movies, but now he denies every making reference to more than six...

Basically, Lucas has changed his story several times over the years, but from
what I've heard the truth goes something like this...

Originally, he'd only written the original film's story, but it grew too big
for one movie so he cut it down into 3 parts and made the original 'Star Wars'
out of most of 'part 1' with an adaption of the ending of 'part 3'. There was
originally just the one Death Star which wouldn't have been destroyed until
'Return Of The Jedi', but he added that part into 'Star Wars' as he didn't
think that he'd ever make more than the one movie.

When 'Star Wars' became successful, he decided to make the other two parts
of the main story into movies too. At this point he had the idea of expanding
it into a nine film trilogy of trilogies (he'd already written the basic
outline for events in the prequels while fleshing out the backstory for the
original trilogy). That's when he committed to the idea and named 'The Empire
Strikes Back' as 'Episode V' in it's opening crawl. He also did a rough outline
for events that would take place in Episodes VII-IX. From what I've heard he
never did write up the final trilogy into 3 actual scripts, so it only exists
as a single overall story-arc with the main plot points and events. Basically
though the middle trilogy would deal with Luke Skywalker and the rebellion
against the evil empire. The prequel trilogy would show how that empire came
to be, and how Luke's father turned to the darkside. The final trilogy would
show the last attempt by the Sith to take over the galaxy (after their
'insidious' political attempt fails) and how the Skywalker legacy finaly
brings balance to the force.

By the time he'd made 'Return Of The Jedi' he'd gone off the idea of making
more Star Wars films (they were very hard to make, and nearly gave him a
nervous breakdown). He decided to leave it as three movies and explained away
the fact that the trilogy started with 'Episode IV' as being part of it's
idea of being like picking up the story halfway through something like an
old Buck Rogers serial and missing out on all the boring set-up stuff
(Episodes I-III) and dropping the audience straight into the action. He also
didn't know how he was going to make the prequel and sequel trilogies due to
them both having a grander scale than the original trilogy. As existing
special effects would have been hard pressed to cope with the enormous battles
required.

When CGI came convincingly into it's own with the release of Jurassic Park,
Lucas saw the possibility of making his other Star Wars movies using this
technology. So he embarked on making the prequel trilogy. At this point he
decided that he would have to abandon the idea of doing a sequel trilogy, as
they took so long to make that he might not live to see their completion
(and would basically have to spend the rest of his life making Star Wars
movies). He still kept his options opened though and made sure that no-one
was allowed to set any books, comics or other extra-movie activities in the
timeframe of Episodes VII-IX. After helping Peter Jackson with his Lord Of
The Rings trilogy, he did consider the possibiliy of going ahead with the
final trilogy by filming the whole thing simultaneously like Jackson was
doing, but he has since decided against it.
