Martha: One Day 'Til Freedom

Martha: One Day 'Til Freedom

March 3, 2005
Tomorrow is the day MARTHA STEWART is expected to go free. For five months, the multi-hyphenate entrepreneur of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia has been imprisoned at the Alderson federal prison for women in West Virginia, a.k.a. "Camp Cupcake," for lying to investigators about her sale of ImClone stock. There, she's been scrubbing floors, raking leaves, cleaning offices and making the most of her situation, as only Martha can do, by concocting microwave recipes, gardening, making crafts, doing yoga and exercising (she's lost a reported 20 pounds).

Martha is reportedly eager to get back to work, but she'll have to contend with an additional five months of house arrest at her 153-acre Bedford, NY estate, complete with an ankle bracelet and having to regularly report to her probation officer. She will be allowed to leave the grounds, however, for up to 48 hours a week for work, and will work on launching two TV shows -- a daily talk show and her own version of "The Apprentice" -- part of a strategy to restore her image and bring in more revenue for her company.

For those looking for an exclusive, inside look at the domestic diva's day-to-day life behind the walls of Camp Cupcake, CNN's "People in the News," airing tonight (Thursday) at 10 p.m. EST, has never-before-seen footage of Martha doing time and interviews with some of her high-profile visitors. The one-hour prime-time special, titled "Martha's Makeover," is hosted by CNN's PAULA ZAHN and features CNN legal analyst JEFFREY TOOBIN. It recalls Martha's rise to fame and fall from grace and reveals just how she coped behind bars -- and how she's now changed. The special also features "The Apprentice" creator Mark Burnett, who will produce both of Martha's TV programs, on his plans to make the soon-to-be-formerly-imprisoned domestic diva the next big thing.

"I'm taking 'Martha Stewart Living,' which is her core show on daytime television, but doing it in front of a live audience where she can interact with real people who need the help," explains Burnett. "And that's where Martha comes to life."

Burnett was just one of the many high-profile celebrities who came down to West Virginia to visit Martha while in jail, other star visitors included BARBARA WALTERS and ROSIE O'DONNELL. There, he got a firsthand look at the day-to-day, menial tasks she had to perform. "When I was there," recalls Burnett, "she was asked to clean the floor waxing machine the afternoon after I was leaving; crappy job. She said, 'Well, this afternoon I'm going to clean the machine: some paraffin; some turpentine; a wide brush. I know exactly how to do it.' Martha embraces everything."

Watch ET for more with Martha, as we count down her final hours in prison and are there the moment she is released!
