makin an attempt to feel comfortable should never get to the point to where you disconnect from your own background. i've felt isolated at times too, but you know what? i've adapted without denying my heritage or anything like that. seems to me that ms. shavonda's kinda...overreacting how the media/society has portrayed people of color. it annoys me too, but do i stare other brothas and sistas down whenever i'm out and about? not at all.

I still think that we are being to hard on Shavonda. Perhaps, as time goes she will feel more accustomed to being around others of her similar heritage. I don't think that it is overacting at all on her part b/c she may have had some bad exepriences with people accusing her of acting too white or snobbish.
[Edited 2/3/05 12:38pm]

I've been accused of acting white and it hasn't stopped me from connecting with my race. Like I said before, I have to make more of an effort because of it. She doesn't make an effort at all. People like her and the Starbucks girl disgust me

Everyones life expereinces are different. Again as I have said previously, she may have tried to reach people in her race but but ignortant ass people in her race have accused her of acting too white or snobbish so she's like fuck it why should I try to appease them. Whether you like or not this is a reality that has to be dealt with and accpted b/c people are people and you can't change them.

If I'm not mistaken I believe I heard on the show earlier that shavonda was raised by white people. i think shavonda is a represenative of black people. just like the post from dexmsr in politics. he was complaining about stereotypical black characters on tv and this girl is definately not one.

but on a side note that might get me a lot of flack here.... i work mostly with black women. almost my whole dept except for 2 of are black ladies and i seem to notice a trend that other black women seem to not want the other black women to excel or get pats on the back and will stab them in the back quicker than a second. i don't know if this is a cultural thing or it could be just a woman thing. who knows . any thoughts on that.

What you are saying is first class bullshit. Shavanda dosen't have to indentify with ghetto Sheniqua Bithches on the train or anywhere else in order to claim her black heritage. If she wants to carry her self at higher standard above the ghetto black female stereo type than I say more power to her.

As for as the asshole Karomo, he ain't nothing but a trifling hypocite fraud bitch not even worth bringing up. He needs to get a fucking life

[Edited 2/3/05 7:16am]

Who said the person on the train was ghetto? If she was ghetto, what does that matter? She is no better than a person from the ghetto. That is elitist. The issue is she is disconnected from her own people. There is no excuse to justify it. There are different economic classes in all races. Shavonda doesn't seem to want anything to do with the blacks in her own middle class

Co-sign...because at the end of the day, she is still a n*gga to White America in the world. I know that seems harsh but that is reality.

The question are you going to continue to buy into the stereo type of bying the typical nigga that White America talks about or do you try to rise above it is the question. Now that's another reality and for that I can't fault Shavonda for which going is the grain and speaking articulate thus going against against the ghetto young black women sterero type.

Exactly...because it doesn't matter where you live, how many degrees, what car you drive, or how you talk. When you get pulled over the a cop for no reason, you are still a black n*gga to them. And believe me, I have tried to rise above the excuse from cops too many times everytime i get pulled over.

And as for Shavonda, I saw the episode and Karamo was initially upset with Vonda not because she was hooking up with Landon. Its because she was hooking up with Landon and still saying she still loved Shawn at the side of her mouth. That is real shady no matter what race she is. And I for one was upset with Vonda because of it also. If she doesn't want to be with Shawn, then she should leave him alone, hook up with Landon, and be done with it. But don't go stringing Shawn along and calling him all the time while your smooching with another guy. She was acting like a slut to me and in the end she gonna get hurt.

Racism is Racism an that goes without saying. Not everybody is percieved the same or recieves the same treatment in White America and if you think so then you are sadly mistaken. In addition to your racial profile, how you carry yourself influences how "massa" will treat you. There is no doubt that it is a racist world we live. So why dwell on it b/c the problem certainly sure as hell won't go away.

As for Shavonda's relationship with Shawn, it was on the fritz anyway because he had went out of town with another girl on the another episode and so that's why she didn't fight temptation and got with Landon for payback. Now, her Landon are a couple.

Oh and Karoma hypocrite ass needs to quit. He is definitely a bitch not worth mentioning who needs his head checked

Personally, I don't see what the big fucking deal about Shavonda on Real World. I don't think that she totally disassociaties herself from the black race at all. If any thing, I think the the she disassociates herself with Sheniqua ghetto queen strereo type that america tends to have of black females. For so long, America tends to stereo type all young black female under 25 as being urban and listen to Rap Music which is false and racist.

As for dating men of different races, I don't see a big fucking problem with it. It is all a matter of preference. If a black man can date out of his race and no one objects, then why should a black women get flack for following her heart

The guy that Shavonda hooked up with is Landon, and the guy who is pissed with Shavondah is Karamo. smile It is true that people have told Shavonda that she "acts too white". She has talked about that in the confessional on one of The Real World episodes.

I don't have an issue with people dating outside of their race. Shoot, I'm a white woman who happens to find black men extemely attractive! People who know me, I'm sure, think I'm nuts, but who cares what they think?

I agree with the poster one2three who said that Shavonda still calling Shaun all the time, but hooking up with another guy was wrong. That was why Karamo was so pissed about it, because he knew that Shavonda was playing Shaun. But what really got me mad was when Karamo hooked up with a white guy. Now again, I don't care if people date someone outside of their race, but Karamo was contradicting himself when he did that. Karamo tried to explain it by saying the guy that he hooked up with was "helping him" with issues surrounding people of other races, but I dunno. It still didn't make much sense to me, especially when he dissed his other two roommates so much for it.

true she can be who she wants to be, accept who she wants to accept. but even though this is 2005 being Black in America still has many complicated issues connected to it. we can rail and yell about how we all need to just get along and and how we should accept people for who they are and so forth but no matter how much those statements are true it is not practiced in the U.S. it just seems irritating that she distances herself from her own people when in the real world she's going to discover that the very people that she feels connected to is gonna reject her one way or another.

p.s. there's nuthin wrong with being ghetto.

I didn't say White America sees us as ni***rs. That is no where in my words. My comments were not referring to that. They were referring to the notion that Shavonda is somehow better than other blacks not in her social or economic class, when in fact she is not and whites will not see her as better. They really don't give a shit. I experience it everyday as a Black woman. Plus, I'm not speaking about individuals, I can't. I hope you are not making a sweeping generalization that white america loves black people. They (in general) don't. They let us know by the laws they pass and injustices that go on everyday to blacks and other persons of color. They do not see us as equals. You (assuming you're white) may, as an individual, love black people but the majority doesn't

There has been nothing said about her mother being white. However, if her mother was white, that doesn't excuse her disassociation from her race. That would just be a cop-out. It has been mentioned that she has a difficult relationship with her family. That was actually in the premise of the show and how her "character" is introduced on the producers' website. Not associating with black people because your dad treated you bad is bullshit

People, Karamo is not contradicting himself. In the beginning, he preferred his own race. He never said everyone else should date within their race and I don't remember him having an issue with Shavonda dating Shaun. Now, as time progressed, he started dating Ed, who is Puerto Rican. Not that this matters, but most Puerto Ricans have African heritage. Even if Ed was white, Karamo has the right to change his mind about who he dates at any time. I believe he did say he was opening himself up to that and it does not make him a hyprocrite. It makes him someone who has opened his mind. Also, we don't know how much time passed between Fiji and the last episode. It certainly wasn't all in one week. All of this is edited.

Jan it seems that you are quite bias in your interpreation of events and so be it. I sorry but that the bitch Karomo is a fucking hypocrite no matter how you try to sugar coat it. Not all Puerto Ricans have African heritage and Ed was perdominately Caucasian so there is no sense in making excuses for Karoma the racist hypocrite ass. Hopefully, Ed can help the drama queen work out his issues.

I hope you are not making a sweeping generalization that white america loves black people. They (in general) don't. They let us know by the laws they pass and injustices that go on everyday to blacks and other persons of color. They do not see us as equals. You (assuming you're white) may, as an individual, love black people but the majority doesn't

You did say that White America sees you as "all the same, ghetto or refined". Obviously not all of "white America" loves black people -one need look no further than your local branch of the KKK to see that. But to say white America sees you as "all the same"? I highly doubt that.

And for the record, I'm neither white nor American.

I didn't say White America sees us as ni***rs. That is no where in my words. My comments were not referring to that. Maybe I should have worded it differently. I meant that whether you are "ghetto" or "refined" most whites will not think one is better or worse and therefore will not treat you any better regardless. We're all from the same "stock" so to speak. Please don't doubt the "all the same" comment. I experienced this shit just yesterday by not being given the same respect by a white person as they gave to another white person. It's the superior/inferior complex

So, if I say I don't date outside my race and then meet a wonderful white man and decide to date him, I'm a hyprocrite? I don't have the right to do that? I'm glad I don't have friends that think that way. That's like saying a person who hated blacks and realized it was wrong doesn't have the right to realize it was wrong. I'm not understanding.

Side note: Karamo doesn't have the political power to be racist and he never said he hated white people

Hold Up
Karamo did acknowledge his racist hatred by saying that he wanted to slit Landon's throat for no apparent reason
