I just thought it was amusing that the british/english people are being asked why when i thought it should be the other way round Ok if i really have to back up my statement can you give me a while to google

American spelling is more phonteic.. it's as simple as that.
Colour is spelled Color because of how it is pronounced. We (Brits) just like to complicate matters

It was Shaw (I think) who said that Great Britain and America were two countries separated by their common language. This is sooooo true. The slight changes in language highlight a chasm of cultural difference.
I once read that when Webster wrote the American English dictionary he purposefully changed words to the modern (or more phonetic) spelling used in the US today. It was done as another way of distinguishing the new country from the old, new identity - new language. This was essentially done by dropping u's etc. So it is not the British who add letters it is the Americans who ditched them. Happy is he who finds out the causes for things.Virgil (70-19 BC). Virgil was such a lying bastard!

I'm both English and a teacher, so I can clear this up. Yes, we are more intelligent. There is more to it than that, of course, but being as this site is mostly populated by Americans, these breaths will be saved for my death bed instead.

The Americans just invented a simpler version of English because they're too lazy to use all the letters in a word Or some are too stupid.

because its the English language. so the question should read - why do Americans insist on destroying the English lanuage with their removal of 'u'. i.e. Color. You'll never know a girl called Nikki and you'll never find Erotic City

Thanks for the explanation for "the royal we". I was really curious. My experience has just been in movies. I hear "give us some" when one person is asking for something. I used to think "wow, is that some kind of split personality thing" heehee.
