No disrespect here, I love to learn about different cultures and so forth, but why do the British say "we" when they're talking about themselves. i.e. "We broke up with Sally tonight" Just curious.

falloff LOL yeah some 'chavs' say "we brokes up wiv Bazza uva day" for example. But to me that's just like some unintentional irony going on there because the only folks that supposedly use 'we' for effect is the Queen. I'd fish-slap anyone who 'we'd' at me!

Also, the French use 'on' which kinda means 'one'. As in "on marche au magasin", "One walks to the shop." Again, if this was used in English it'd be used by the Queen and the rest of her inbreds.

As for all the 'u's etc. Well sorry Americans, but the reall question is WHERE THE FUCK DID YOU PUT ONES 'u's'!!!!! Olde English came first hmph!

Let's not get dull about it, but of course the English spellings came first (check the history books folks). Your American ancestors took the decision to deliberately alter the spelling of words with too many/ unnecessary letters, when they were creating their first American dictionaries - which seems like a good idea, I guess.

And NO-ONE over here says "we" instead of "I", except for the Queen (it's even known as "The Royal We") and let's face it, the royal family should've been abolished decades ago...

Thanks for the explanation for "the royal we". I was really curious. My experience has just been in movies. I hear "give us some" when one person is asking for something. I used to think "wow, is that some kind of split personality thing" heehee.

Ah, now "us" is a different matter nod Many areas, especially in the North of England, say"us" instead of "me" e.g. "Give us that CD", "Let us go on your PC.."
Split personality? Hmm, if you met some of those Northern types, it probably has some kind of mental illness issue, yes nod lol
There are parts of England where I struggle to understand a damn word myself, and I was born and raised here!

it really should be the uk people asking the americans why they continue to bastardise the English language

the clue is in the name..... the language is ENGLISH i.e from the UK anything you americans do to it is just wrong.

I do agree with ella English and American are totally different languages nod

I love slang and i know language is progressing all the time but you americans bend the old rules a little to far mad
