Talking to a nutritionist is a great idea. nod

Lots of foods have calcium, including almonds, most dark leafy green veggies (kale, broccoli, spinach), most types of tofu, some dried fruits, lots of fortified foods (orange juice, soymilk). . .and supplements, of course.

Fortified orange juice? Not if you're vegan. At some point in the recent past, the manufacturers of calcium-fortified orange juice started adding vitamin D as well. That's actually a good idea, as vitamin D aids in calcium absorption. But here's the problem for vegans: for whatever reason, it's always vitamin D3, which is always animal-based. What you want is vitamin D2, which is always plant-based, and is what you'll find in some other fortified products, such as Silk soymilk.

The one exception I've found is Simply Orange, which produces a calcium-fortified OJ without any vitamin D. Their distribution isn't the greatest, though... I've noticed that many supermarkets don't carry it.

The bigger problem here is the tendency of vegetarians and vegans to rely on fortified foods and supplements to meet their dietary needs. Consider: if your diet needs supplementation to be adequate, then the diet itself is necessary inadequate. (Modus Tollens in action, for those of you who have studied logic.)

While I realize that whether a food is "natural" or not is, strictly speaking, irrelevant to the question of whether it's vegetarian or vegan, many folks who promote this type of diet want their food "natural" (e.g., they want organic produce and GMO-free foods). And yet when they're questioned about possible nutritional deficiencies, they suggest... fortified "Frankenfoods" or popping pills (supplements)? confuse

You can make better choices for yourself and/or animals without being religous about it (ie. fussing about the source of vitamins).

And you don't HAVE to supplement, but it makes it easier (for anybody) to meet certainly dietary recommendations. In any case, a diet plus supplements is perfectly adequate if you have access to supplements!

That's all I have to say about that. shrug

But vegetarianism and veganism require one to be "religious"--it's inherent. To be a vegetarian, one must, well, be vegetarian, and that means 100% abstention from the off-limits food groups. If I ate a hamburger once a month, but otherwise consumed no animal products, could I call myself "vegetarian" or "vegan" in good faith? No, and I think most people who self-identify as either would agree.

Why does each vegetarian/vegan get to decide for himself what deviations from the rules are acceptable, and still bestow the title of "vegetarian" or "vegan" upon himself? shrug

The need to deviate from the rules illustrates one of my issues with vegetarianism/veganism: complicated problems such as the ethics of using animals for food can rarely be solved with simplistic answers.

And you don't HAVE to supplement, but it makes it easier (for anybody) to meet certainly dietary recommendations.

Vitamin B12 supplementation is necessary... even the vegan advocacy groups admit it. There are no reliable plant-based sources of B12. Granted, one can easily avoid popping pills by eating foods fortified with laboratory-grown B12 (it's bacteria)... there are many choices, and one needs only a tiny bit of it... but even fortified foods are a form of supplementation. To me, the B12 problem is one of the biggest warning signs that a diet of 100% plant products is possibly a bad idea for humans.

Neither is soy that's been processed in such a way to make it look and taste like a hamburger, but I haven't heard of vegetarians avoiding Boca Burgers because they're "unnatural." hmmm

(BTW, Boca Burgers are a product of Altria Group, formerly known as Philip Morris. If you buy Boca Burgers, you're putting money in the pockets of "Big Tobacco.")

The natural/unnatural distiniction is a poor litmus test for putting together a healthy diet. Most foods in these modern times are hardly "natural." I just took a look in the fridge, and while we admittedly need to do some grocery shopping, the only "natural" things I saw were two oranges and two lemons. And even those aren't "natural" here in western Washington state, where the climate is such that growing citrus fruit is difficult, if not impossible.

Agreed. I never advocated soy as a propper replacement to milk. I use it instead of milk, becuase compared to the evils of milk, I'll take soy. The true natural thing to do is drink water. The only times I need soy is if I'm drinking coffee (our ancesters swinging from them vines never had that opportunity).

But I must apologize to EVERYONE for this entire thread. I never meant for it to be taken so seriously and actually spawn intelligent dialogue.

Again, my apologies.

How do you make sure to get enough calcium and stuff?

Brocoli and Spinach have as much calcium as milk.

You may be right about spinach. According to the Harvard School of Public Health, one cup of skim milk has 306 mg of calcium. One cup of frozen, boiled spinach has 291 mg. That's close enough for me.

(Source: http://www.hsph.harvard.e...lcium.html)

Broccoli, however, is different. First, it's noticeably absent from Harvard's list of foods that "are good sources of calcium." Second, according to the Vegetarian Resource Group, one cup of cooked broccoli has a mere 94 mg of calcium. I hope you like broccoli, because you're going to be eating a lot of it.

(Source: http://www.vrg.org/nutrit...alcium.htm)

BTW, the Harvard article is a good source of objective information about calcium, milk, and health. It's neither the work of the dairy industry (like the "Got Milk?" ad campaign) nor vegan propaganda written by people whose primary motivation is something other than your health. And it admits that some of the questions don't have clear answers yet.

Why? Veggies and legumes are cheap compared to other foods.

not where i live. it's cheaper to buy gummy fruit snacks than it is to buy fresh fruit and veggies. that being so, i try my best and avoid the gummy fruit snacks.

When I stopped drinking milk and all dairy, my skin cleared up and looke years younger. When the instestinal track is overworked or invaded by foreign unatural "food" other organs (of which the skin is one) react by trying to help eliminate some of the mucus formed by it. The mucus goes into the blood, out through your feases, and into your lungs. YOur skin tries to rid some of the chemicals that are created by this process---Milk is nasty nasty stuff.

did anyone see that hilarious Dana Carvey skit on SNL back in the day. "Chopping Brocolli"?
