Robert DeNiro/Martin Scorsese Working on 'Taxi Driver' Sequel From IMDB.com Movie & TV News:
http://www.imdb.com/news/wenn/#1 "Screen legend Robert De Niro has reunited with iconic director Martin Scorsese to work on a sequel to their classic movie Taxi Driver. The Oscar-winning actor, who starred as disturbed Vietnam veteran Travis Bickle in the 1976 film, has confirmed the movie veterans are mulling over script ideas for a follow-up to the gritty original. Apart from his comedy turn in Meet The Parents and its recent sequel Meet The Fockers, De Niro has starred in a series of flop films - and critics are hoping Travis Bickle's resurrection will restore his reputation as one of the greatest dramatic actors of all time. De Niro, 61, says, "I was talking with Martin Scorsese about doing what I guess you'd call a sequel to Taxi Driver, where he is older." So, what's the general consensus on this idea? I personally think it's a bad idea...though I absolutely love both DeNiro and Scorsese, I think too much time has passed since TAxi Driver came out, and sequels to great movies (such as Taxi Driver is, imo) almost NEVER turn out as great as the original and only end up frustrating everybody and tainting the legacy of the earlier film. I love Robert DeNiro so much but he's been in soooo many stinko movies in a row now for so long, this sequel idea only reeks of desperation to me and I don't think desperation is a good enough reason to make a sequel to a movie of Taxi Driver's calibre.

I would have thought that it was a bad idea before "Before Sunset" came out so many years later and was brilliant and added to the first film.

So if he makes a bad sequel will it actually make the original a worse film when u watch it?

Erm, no. Which is why I specifically said that I think making a shitty sequal (which sounds like it's being discussed more as a vehicle to give DeNiro's sagging career a shot in the arm than to add anything to, or enhance, the first film) could potentially taint "the *LEGACY* of the original film". Oh I'd see it, too, if it gets made. Who knows. Maybe it'd turn out brilliant. Here's hoping it will (if they do end up making it, that is.)

I THINK ITS A COOL IDEA. I LOVE THAT MOVIE 2 PEICES. I love DeNiro & Scorsese 2. U R right SQ... sequels never equal the original... AND this movie was made in the 70's, (long time ) HOWEVER, IMO, I think it could work. It would B cool 2 see the status quo of DeNiro all these years later, after being the vigilante hero of jodie foster. It could go in so many ways...He could B a cop, a psycho, a recluse, an authour, a serial killer, (?) but def not a taxi driver. It would B cool 2 have cybil sheppard back as she was attracted 2 him again after his heroic acions. They could B married or just meet again somewhere. He could B a politician....she could.....endless possibilities. I say he GO 4 IT!!! I love the music in here 2. It is very sensual & eerie...ala PRINCE. I get hot listening 2 it.....ala PRINCE. I love the idea in this film 's circumstance. BTW, HIGH SNOW QUEEN. HOW U DOIN HON? Still in MINNE? I really have 2 meet U!. May the BELLS ring 4 U even when ur not in love.

What's a legacy, is that in the film? . [Edited 1/20/05 21:52pm]

Hi sweet grandebelle. You make a lot of good points and when I think about seeing all those characters together again and the potential that's there for various plots or situations, it *IS* exciting and intriguing, that's for sure. I don't know...maybe it'd turn out really great. Guess we'll just have to wait and see. Anyway, I'm doing alright, thank you. And yes I'm still here in Minneapolis. You come to the Mpls fan parties sometimes, don't you? Maybe at one of those sometime soon we'll be able to say hello. That would be nice. I'd love to meet you!!

Snow means it as the FILM being a classic, & its content not 2 b tampered with so if left alone. it wouuld remain in its pure form, or entirety of excellence. Those two chaps are two of my absolute all time favourites, but have they really been hit with an inspired and brilliant movie idea that's true to their art and fantastic film making..... .....or have they exhausted all their gifted imaginations and kidded themselves into thinking they have Taxi Driver II. I hope they do the right thing for the fans "..My work is personal, I'm a working person, I put in work, I work with purpose.."

I do understand what legacy means, of course, but am suggesting that there is nothing to be lost by making the sequel as the original will still always be that same, classic movie. It's natural to want your heroes to remain the way u want them, they way u know them at their best, but there's really nothing to be scared of. It could be great, and for this reason is worth taking a shot at. People just tend to cling to their movies with such fervour and it's understandable that people can get sentimental.

I don't understand why people feel the need to be needlessly asshole-y. If you didn't agree with my opinions on a sequel, you should've just directly stated so instead of being obnoxious and 'facetious'. JMO

Facetious to poke at my point, however trivial. My response just above this is what I was getting at, and the one that belle thoughtfully addressed. I personally would love to see this made, for better or for worse. I'm sorry if my responses seemed unnecessary. It was just something that took my interest, and not in the least related to whether you personally think the film should be remade or not. I don't think I've posted on your threads before, hence your 'smartass' and 'obnoxious' comments. You'll find those to be unfounded , but still, my apologies. Let's hope the movie is good. ... My DEAR FAUXIE & SNOW QUEEN: P-E-A-C-E! I really dont think fauxie meant anything negative ON PURPOSE... SNOW QUEEN, FAUXIE is a gentle, sweet soul from what I know about him. Excuse....dont accuse him. And fauxie, I understand what UR saying....The sequel will not affect the originals grandieur. However I feel with scorsese at the helm, we have nothing 2 fear about the sequel being a FLOP. The wheels that r now turning sound promising indeed. However I must add: in alot of cases, a follow up movie(s) that turned out crappy, did & has ruined the originals script. Lets think positive here tho. The excellence is THERE. Now we need C Sheppard, & J Foster here 2! If the musical score is as good and the content of the movie just as thrilling as the 1st...we r in! SEE YA SOON SNOW QUEEN and FAUXIE All 3 of us r just concerned about the outcome of this great movie. May the BELLS ring 4 U even when ur not in love.
