Man, I'm surprised with the U.S. plaudits we have here for U.K. sitcoms smile

Is this universal in the States?

SENIK!!!
I can't speak for other parts of the US, but I'm right across the lake from Canada and we get tons of British programs. Most of them are a little older like Are You Being Served and Keeping Up Appearances. But we also get the Kumars at No42 and Peep Show.My whole family can quote almost every episode of Red Dwarf by heart...kind of sad when you think of it. lol
I like the dramas too. The U.K. version of Touching Evil was brilliant, the Americans ruined it when they remade it.

Shelly!!! highfive hug kotc

Out of all the ones you've just named "Red Dwarf" is a killer, I loved that show woot! (that was one of the main reasons my high school homework was always late sigh )

"Peep Show" is fairly new but very funny.

Don't think much of "The Kumars At No.42" coz I can't stand that twat Sanjeev Bhaskar, although it's a big hit over here.

The other two that you've mentioned have a huge following too. I've only seen a couple of old repeats of "Are You Being Served" but it's a cult classic nod And Hyacinth Bu'cket (silent 'C' and silent 't' rolleyes ...she insists lol ) is almost as popular an old fuddy-duddy as Victor in "One Foot In The Grave".

thumbs up!

We luuuuurve "Red Dwarf"!!!! Even though we've seen them all dozens of times, there are certain episodes that are so funny I can't even breathe. lol I keep hearing rumors of a movie, but never heard of them really making it.Something about how hard it is to get all the original cast together.Craig Charles is brutal!
Phooey, now I have "Rimmer World" in my head,I have to go find the tape and watch it!
We also liked " Fools and Horses" and "Good Night Sweetheart".

Have you all seen 'Nighty Night'? It gets my nomination for the funniest British sit-com ever.

It took me a while to get into 'Peep Show' but I liked the episode where the chubby one makes friends with a Nazi without knowing it. The skinny bloke has a friend whom continuously smokes crack. I'm never very good at explaining stuff - I guess you'd have to see it.

I just saw this BBC version of Friends and it is hilarious! Did this come AFTER friends or before? The US has been stealing a lot of great show ideas from the UK, which is why I ask. I stopped watching Friends forever ago, and coupling seems a lot funnier to me. Is anyone else a fan?

From what I heard, the American Friends sitcom was supposed to be loosely based on the BBC version. However, since, the BBC version is more risky America had to tone things down so thats why they developed Friends.

"Friends" was based off "Coupling".
Just watch the credits in the earlier episodes...they used to acknowledge it...
I don't know if they did for the later seasons...
Hollyweird is notorious for stealing British sitcoms and adapting them for US audiences...

Oh. Is that what the character was called? It's one of those shows that I never actually watched - I just sort of looked at it. Well, looked at Ben Chaplin.

The Kumars show is little too over the top for myself. I tried to get into but it its to chessy. Aside from that show, I pretty much dig whats on BBC America Channel.

No, I haven't seen "Nighty Night" yet.I'll definitely be looking for it. Sometimes we can vote for shows on BBC America and we get all the Toronto stations that carry a lot of your shows. They just finished running the "Young Ones" on the BBC.We also were addicted to "The Grifters" with Robson Greene lol

Ah, the Young ones is the shit. Back in the day, MTV used to air latenight in the 80's. Now, BBC America airs the show again in syndication. That show used to be my favorite.
