I have this jar with a spider in it on my desk

and I've been trawling the internet for a photo of one that looks just like it with not a great deal of success. I thought it might be a wolf spider (Australian type), but the abdomen (about 2.5cm and quite fat) is twice the size of the thorax. Leg span is probably about 7-8 cm. Brownish grey, not really hairy, with kind of a cross on it's back. The kids found it in their cubby house. My skin crawls when I look at it!

Oh god. anyone else remember that thread from last year with photos of the spider hiding behind a large wallclock?

That thing was huge, the clock looked like it was as big as a vinyl album and it's legs were sticking out from behind it! I was like, eek

It does look like this! But (through some internet research of my own) this looks like a huntsman from Sydney - long way from home! Huntsmen in Melbourne look quite different, more hairy and brown rather than grey like this.

I mean 7-8cm across, not 7-8cm long legs! if that's what you're thinking! What should I give it to eat? He looks hungry!

I don't like spiders either. When I see one, I usually try one of 3 things.

-Vacuum cleaner.

-Spray.

-Boiling water.

I think you'd need at least nuclear waste to pour over it to kill off such a thing. That, or Chanel 5.

eek eek eek eek
The spider hasn't got such a huge abdomen anymore!!!!
Overnight it laid eggs in a white egg sac the size of a 50 cent piece!!!! We gave her a blow-fly to eat for all that effort, cause I know giving birth takes a lot out of you. We are eagerly awaiting for the eggs to hatch and a thousand cute little spiderlings to be born!

We moved her to a bigger jar with some leaves and bark in it. She's made herself quite at home! Very protective of the egg sac, sits with her legs wrapped around it at all times. I think once the kids hatch I might have to kill them - there are way too many spiders in the backyard already. Just want to see what they will look like! Guess we could let them loose next door lol
