I Met David Sedaris Last Night

He was in Seattle, city 28 out of 31 on his book tour, and gave several readings last night. The first was from a story that will be in The New Yorker in a few weeks, and the "plot" revolves around this Boil From Hell he has on his tailbone.

So, I waited in line for an autograph and I asked him if his boil/cyst is now okay, to which he informed me that it's returned 3 more times and he'll need to have surgery on it to remove it, and will need to sit on one of those donut cushions. As we chatted, he drew an outline of his torso, complete with underwear and boil, on the bookpage with his autograph. What a classy guy!

woot!

Seriously, though, if you don't know of him, he's hilarious and I recommend that you pick up one of his books. You will not stop laughing. I'd start with "Naked" if I were you, and then "Me Talk Pretty One Day", then "Holidays on Ice" and "Barrel Fever". His newest one is "Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim".

IMO, the only thing he and Oscar Wilde have in common is that they're both gay. Seems like comparing apples and oranges, really.

Sedaris doesn't write fiction, and he draws exclusively from his own life experiences and family dysfunction to make his points (and sometimes there aren't any points to be made at all, he's just trying to discuss the types of things that tie us together as humans and show how funny the "human condition" can be).

Oscar Wilde was far more political, satirical and much of his work dealt with class differences, topics that Sedaris tends not to get into much. Again, just my opinion.

I thought of you when he talked about his reading in his home town in N Carolina; a reading full of his old teachers, neighbors, friends, etc. After his reading, his brother, Paul (aka, 'The Rooster') came up to him and congratulated him, giving him a few pats on the back. Later, David found that he'd been walking around with a sign on his back saying "I Suck Dick", which Paul had provided. falloff

David also forgot to check his suitcase before he left his brother's house, and he got to the airport and had his bags searched. Lo and behold, Paul had put a bunch of his stained size 38 white cotton briefs at the top of the suitcase. David said it was pretty obvious Paul had been working on them awhile.....

Our bookstore hosted a book reading by him just a month ago!

He read the Sinterklaas story and the Anne Frank House story, which is one of my faves. I too one day found myself looking for an appartment in Paris and faced the same things he describes in that story.

And you are right; he is an amazing person. Did you have to stand in line long too? Some of our visitors stood in line for like an hour. He takes all the time of the world and makes everyone feel really comfortable.

I never even THOUGHT about making a link between the two, as there is no simularity between their writings. At all. Nada, noppes, njente.

He sold out Benaroya Hall here in Seattle, which probably seats a thousand people, so I was really surprised that he stuck around to sign autographs. I waited for about 30-40 mins, and I was at about the halfway mark in the queue, so he was probably there for a long time. Poor guy must've really been dying for a cigarette!! smile

I saw him at a little old hall (from the 17th century) that would only fit around 200 people...

Really amazing. He came into the store the day after to do some impromptu signing as well...
