there are a lot of unhappy people

ok, so i know this is no stunning revelation and i know its not necessarily groundbreaking news. i'm just amazed at how many unhappy people there are in the world...or at least in my little slice of it. is this a growing problem, depression? or has it always been this abundant and i've just never noticed that half of the people i come in contact with are unhappy.

i feel very blessed to be content enough with life to enjoy it yet have enough drive to continue growing as a person. so now, how do i try to get these people i know to enjoy their lives more?

For that you'd need to do a complete overhaul on western society. We're trained from the moment we can tell our feet from our diapers to be unhappy -trained that a certain new product or the hot new thing will bring us satisfaction.

Dissatisfaction is essential for the Western world to function in it's current form.

asylum

you can simply be supportive of their efforts.

i have seen from our clients that there is never a cut-off point.

however if someone gives up without a fight they will only end up here.

or worse. hans enjoys visitors far too much.

Isn't it essential for human life in general? What if we were satisfied with starving, or satisfied to not have sex?

Dissatisfaction with hunger or lack of sex is innate. It's essential to human survival, so not really the same thing I was talking about. In fact, not at all. You'll die if you don't eat. You won't die if you don't get a new cell phone or computer every time there's an update.

I suppose so. But is this really unique to Western society? Does this not happen in other cultures?

Depression is very real and very confronting to many, many people...there seems to be a lot of depression around right now me included, but it DOES lift enough to see a light at the end of the tunnel hopefully

i think we're living in some dark times.

i have trouble living with the knowledge that my generation is one of the last to experience drinkable water, breathable air, and an abundance of plant life on this planet. these will be gone in another fifty years. even in my life span i've noticed changes, less migratory birds, less frogs, no more fireflies which used to be everywhere when i was a kid.

this knowledge colors my everyday living experience, particularly when i head off to work and face another day of creating documents which don't really matter when the planet is dying.

sure, it's a bit drama-queenish, but i think that if american people (or the people of any industrialized society) sat down and really, really looked at the hypocrisy of our life styles (for example paying hundreds of dollars at the vet for our pets, then buying a sandwich made from mass-murdered animals no one gave a darn about or driving to work every day in a gas-guzzling SUV while simultaneously griping about the price of oil) we'd have to seriously question the lives we lead and the path we're following.

imo, the industrial revolution will be our downfall, and staving off the decline of the planet (we will be the next mass-extinction event - it's already in progress) would mean adopting a waste-free lifestyle and going without electricity, the internet, PCs, etc. will that happen?

i think that on some level we are all aware of the problem. facing it and dealing with said problem will require a complete overhaul of the direction humans have taken and we're not bright enough to pull it off. therefore we are doomed.

cheery, eh? ok. off to work now

nod I know a lot of people who would've been saved a lot of grief if attitudes towards sexuality and gender wre different than they are.
