I'm not familiar with this diet... heard about it, but didn't pay too much attention. But, isn't this the one where you're supposed to eat a lot bacon or something?

And, I'm not trying to be stupid... it is a serious question.

Yes, bacon is allowed. Any kind of protein. The restriction is on carbohydrates.

But what about the high fat content in bacon and a lot of the proteins? I caught the tail end of some diet (must have been this because of the bacon) and I was curious how it could possibly be healthy if foods with such high fat content is allowed in excess. Though, maybe it was a different diet, the one they were talking about allowed as much protein as you want, from any source.

This diet makes sense to me. Of course, you should watch the fat content of the meats you choose, but everyone should try to eat less refined sugar.

The Atkins Diet I'm sorry I'm not on it, but my dad went on it and shrunk down.

Thanks to both of you for the serious responses.
The diet makes sense to me too because flour and sugar are like poison to me.
I feel like a million bucks being on this diet.
(and I'm not eating a ton of bacon or any other kind of meat)

Good! Stay away from the bacon! biggrin

This diet wouldn't be good for me at all. I looooove pasta and bread way too much. There'd simply be no way. I just try to eat everything in moderation.

Any rapid weight loss can cause hair loss, not just Atkins. Atkins is a little strange to me, but I wouldn't blame it for hair loss.

I was on the Atkins diet for about 5 months. I lost about 20 pounds. Then I fell off the wagon 2 months ago but I've only gained 5 back. Since I've been off it, I realized how much more energy I had while I was on it. I didn't experience any negative side effects such as hair loss or whatever. Just don't trick yourself into thinking that you can eat unlimited amounts of bacon and butter and whatever. That's not what it's about. You still have to watch you portions and use common sense. And drink tons of water. That's the hardest part for me. But follwing Atkins is actually pretty easy and I intend to get back on it tomorrow. Good luck to you!

disbelief The Atkins diet is so incredibly unhealthy. I can't believe you people actually think being skinny is more important than being healthy.

I mean, c'mon! Liver, kidney and brain damage? Loss of energy? Who cares as long as you lose weight, right? You know why you lose weight on the Atkins diet? Because it puts your body into starvation mode -what you're losing is water and muscle mass, not fat.

The first thing we learned in grade eight science is that your body needs complex carbohydrates to function properly. It's a bit of a no-brainer that this "diet" is a terrible idea.

I agree Meow85...I abused slimming tea and went on high protein/fat diets for years until finding the writings of nutritionist MICHAEL COLGAN. If you actually give a fuck about your health (as well as want to look half-decent), go to his website.

I am involved in the Miss America organization and am on this diet. It workes very well if you truely can follow it but it isn't too good for your heart to if you have heart problems I would recomend cutting fat instred of carbs because long term studies show that cutting carbs and cutting fat work equally well.

Or, God forbid, eating a balanced diet and sensible portions.....

This is exactly what I'm talking about. Being skinny should never be more important than being healthy.
