Isn't this all just stating the obvious? Everyone, regardless of being in the U.S. or UK is going to be taxed beyond a point they're happy with. xOSphere said it probably the best.

It's part of life-part of having a good standard of living (as lollyp0p said), and it just goes with the flow.

You either spend your time angry about what you can't change, or you move or look into ways you can be part of making the system better. If you're so pissed off why don't you channel that energy into trying to get things changed?

Not a huge chance it'll happen, but worth a shot if it bothers you so much.

Just on a couple of the things you mentioned though:

the "TV" licence is actually used by the BBC for all radio and internet services too, and given that their TV, radio AND website are all streets ahead of anything else around I'm happy to pay it. £100ish a year is a small price to pay to have decent commercial-free TV channels.

car tax actually varies a lot depending on what you drive because it takes into account the impact you have on the environment. so mums taking their kids 2 miles down the road in a huge 4x4 pay about double what someone driving an economical small car does, because they use far more fossil fuels, contribute much more CO2 and are more liable to maim small kids with their bull bars! I'm a big believer in using car tax to deter people from driving cars that are far bigger (and thus more polluting) than they need to be.
