They're trying to get rid of DVD?

I just read the Star Wars thread and folk were saying that they're bringing out the next generation of movie players. When's that happening? What's so great about the new ones? Is the problem that DVD players have become too cheap? What's going on?

Not so much get rid of it, as introduce an upgrade. There are two formats fighting it out right now for market supremacy (which may ultimately kill both of them. So far, DVD Audio and SACD are competing, with neither one really taking off). The good thing about BOTH systems is that they would still be able to play your old DVDs.

The new systems are both considered better than traditional DVD, because they can get more data on to each disc, and the compression rate is lower. The picture and sound are both considered far superior. Now, as to whether or not either will be a success remains to be seen. Most folks are still in the process of upgrading to DVD, and won't want to shell out the money again for upgrades. Of course, the fact that your DVDs CAN play on these systems gives them a bit of a leg up, since you wouldn't have to get rid of your DVDs. This is a similar strategy that Sony used for its Playstation2, by making it compatible to play PS1 games, so it could work. Time will tell.

I though DVD audio and SACD were just for music? I got some CD's today which were billed as "Hybrid SACD designed to play in stereo in both CD and SACD players, as well as SACD-compatible DVD players".

What I think that means is, you can play them in regular cd players (and just get the music) or you can play them in a SACD DVD player (and get bonus/enhanced stuff)

I could be wrong tho

my bro has an Denon SACD player hooked up to B&W speakers...and to be honest, there isn't much difference between that and if you put an ordinary cd through a 5.1 dolby receiver hmmm

I've gotta say, the SACD stuf I got today, it wasn't much better in my DVD player than it was in my CD player. The difference between Dolby Pro Logic and Dolby Digital isn't enormous (unless you have the hearing of a bat).
