Animal massacre in my street

My neighbours dog just killed their cat. My kid saw the dog chase the cat past our house before, (but luckily was spared the gore) and I just saw the neighbour scraping up his cat with a shovel and taking it home. Gross! They are obviously not going to report their own dog to the authorities, should I do it? ...It could have been one of my children. I feel sick now sad

This particular dog and it's mother, have attacked another dog in the street before, and the council took them to court and made them build this huge enclosure for them (pit bulls) but unfortunately their garage is part of it and the dogs bend the roller door and get out every now and again. My husband is going to go and talk to them about it tonight, we don't feel safe living next door. Poor cat indeed, it's a wonder it survived this long.

I'm a cat guy myself so that totally bums me out. But, I don't think you need to report it. If they're responsible pet owners, they'll take care of things themselves. However, I get freaked out around dogs that people think are "killers" (pitt bulls, dobermins, etc) so if you feel that children, others are in danger, you should at least talk to the owners - tell them they need to keep their dog in the house or on a leash.... Dogs scare me in general. (yes, I can be a pansy).

This is sooo upsetting. sigh

The only bad thing about calling the authorities about this is that they will probably destroy the dogs. It's always the animals that pay the price for their irresponsible owners. However, I don't think you guys should have to live in fear like that either.
Where's Tackam? She works with animals and could probably help.

So do you want to know how the story continues?

Well, my husband went over to the neighbours house last night to talk to them, and turns out the whole family is divided over this issue. The dad died over a year ago, and the eldest son who is 32 (and thick as a plank) reckons he is the man of the house now and won't listen to his mum or younger siblings who have been telling him to get rid of this dog for ages, and he won't because his dad loved that dog (who was only a little puppy then - big difference to now).

His little sister was crying all night because it was her cat and she is so mad at her brother, as you can imagine. The neighbours want us to go over there and speak to the eldest son (he wasn't home last night) they think he's more likely to listen to us, they are hopeful we can speak some sense into him. They all want him to move out and take the dogs with him, well that would be nice.

bummer. but it sounds like the family is aware of the issue already and is taking steps to handle it. hopefully the dog will end up somewhere wild enough for it to be at home.

pit bulls are the kind of dog that need to be trained EXTREMEMLY well. they can be very loving, sweet, and playful but because of their enormous strength, tiny intelligence, and high aggression they are often involved in vicious fights and maulings. it's a damn shame, too.

in the two veterinary hospitals where i used to work, pit bulls were pretty popular pets and no matter how poorly that pit bull behaved the owners would always be like, "s/he's just saying hi!" or "s/he's just playing!" as if almost ripping someone's limb off is akin to saying hello. confused

i don;t know if animal control can do anything if the dog was aggressive towards another animal. I think they can only step in if the animal was aggressive towards a human but check into it and i wish the best for everyone involved.

Here they can. The owners can get taken to court and fined for attacks on other animals - but only if reported. I think it is up to the family to report it if they want anything done. The sister could do it, but I guess it would cause a family rift. (She is 22 btw). This particular dog has already been involved in another attack and was impounded but strangely enough returned after court appearances.

This dog certainly has developed a taste for blood now, and I would classify it as a dangerous animal. The owners have never trained the dog, it just stays in it's enclosure day in day out trying to escape - I can always hear it jumping against the roller door.

i think that, for the safety of children and animals in your neighborhood, you should report this as soon as possible. sadly, the guy may be a lost cause, and would just turn around and get new dogs - i wonder if the animal control department in your area can ban him from having other dogs, or if he could be required to go through some training on responsible animal guardianship.

i get so mad at the industry (and yes, it is exactly that) behind fighting dog breeds. there's money to be made off these dog breeds, and irresponsible breeders see them as nothing but a financial goldmine. disbelief

tell me about it. i hate the breeder mentality in general. any community that would deem an animal defective for purely physical reasons and put it down is horrible in my book.

I used to feel the same way... until I had children, that is. Now I couldn't bear th thought of all the extra work involved with having a pet of my own. I am sure the kids will ask for a dog, and then I will certainly get them a sensible breed, like a little Maltese-shitzu cross or something manageable like that, way later down the track though.

Absolutely. I agree on every point. If nothing comes of a civilised meeting with the guy tonight, this will be our next step. We know that even if he had to get this dog destroyed he would just get some new ones. I will find out about getting a ban and training, it sounds like what he needs! He has been illegally breeding them - I know because they are legally required to have a sign out the front (they don't) and nearly every year I hear puppies yipping in the backyard. One time I heard them bragging there was a litter of 10! Our safety and the safety of other animals and children in the street is more important than maintaining neighbourly relations, especially since the rest of his family agrees with US.

eek 2 police cars and 3 unmarked ones (2 fitted with cages) just parked out the front and removed the offending animals! The killer dogs must've struck again. I know last night they had a family get together, and I hope the brother's maltese terrier wasn't the victim this time! I'm sure they won't get them back this time.

Agreed. I'm afraid of a lot of dogs too. Well, excpet the really little ones, because even if they bite, they don't do any damage. But I don't even wanna be in the same room as a dog if it's taller than my knees, and I'm a little person (4'11) so that eliminates most dogs.

Maybe their famliy get-together was to turn in the animals. Whatever happened, that's good news you and your kids aren't living next door to a psycho death beast.

Hello? Mods???

I doubt they'll take this down. I mean if they allowed that link to the decapitation video to remain, they'll probably start ranting about "free speech" and all that kind of crapola.

I'm out of here again. I've got someplace else to go now anyway.

Somebody email me when that image is removed.
