I was bitten by a dog yesterday

I was walking my sister’s dog (an extremely obedient and intelligent Border collie) on a lead yesterday in a quiet village. With my dog close to heal, on a short lead I passed a couple of women walking a dog (also on a lead) but clearly not under control. As we passed, their dog whipped round behind them and went straight for mine. In a lame effort to prevent a dogfight I stepped forward and received a lovely bite on my thigh. It was only a midsize dog but boy did it hurt. The bite went straight through my jeans and into my flesh. The bruising is very pretty.

What the hell do you do in a situation like that? I was stunned, the dogs owners were stunned. We just stood there with them apologising and me in shock. Then we just went our separate ways.

Then like a girl I felt sick and had to have a sit down. My sister’s dog was so scared with this "what did I do" look on his face, awwwww.

You should get a tetanus shot, that goes for any animal bite that draws blood.

And the owner of the animal that bit you (or their medical insurance) should pay for it. But seeing as you're in the UK your doctor should be able adminster the shot free (The NHS is still free, isn't it?).

If you're worried that the dog that bit you is not safe to be allowed out, you can report it to the RSPCA (of course, you'd need to know the owners' details to do that) and they will carry out an evaluation of the dog to decide it's fate. Usually, they will insist on the dog being muzzled in future, occasionally in more serious cases they will take the dog away to be destroyed.

Any dog with a propensity to bite (regardless of breed and size) should be muzzled when out in public.

Next time (and hopefully there won't be one) treat it exactly as you'd treat a car crash - exchange name, address, and insurance details.

I thought about the muzzling thing afterwards. Funnily enough my thoughts were just that, names addresses etc (that's what 2 years in America does to you) but the last thing I wanted to do was start getting all litigious and have the dog put down sad

I am covered for Tetanus. It just hurt like hell.

you need to find out if that dog has rabies and i believe the owners of the dog are responsible for paying any medical bills incurred by the dog bite.

You think I'm kidding? Did it just a few days ago myself, there's a huge female crossbreed here who looks like a tank, she always attacks Uzie so I kicked her when she came near us. Uzie ran home cos she was so scared of the other dog sad

Yep like I said, I blame the owners not the dog, it's them that need to be "put down". Their dog looked pretty freaked too, with a "what did I just do" look on his face

YOU want to adopt the dog that bit ME? Is that some kind of sadistic love of things that cause me pain?
