About a year ago, two of my friends chose Deop as their bc of choice. One gained 30 lbs.; the other, 40 lbs. Though it would be nice to be period free - it scares me a bit. "She made me glad to be a man"

Amen. I was on it for 9 months and I gained 15 pounds. I had never been able to gain weight until I got the Depo shot. I finally got off because I was having some MAJOR mood swings.

All you have to do is start another pack.

Not entirly correct the fewer periods you have the less hormones flooding your system every month making you loose your endometrial lining, these hormones are a big factor in female cancers this is why women who start periods later than average and have children (ie have breaks in the menstrual cycle) are at a lower risk of certain cancers like ovarian, vulval and endometrial. so really not having as many periods isn't always bad for you..... it is unnatural though and can cause other problems but there are plus sides too. I have this injection btw and i haven't had any weight gain, I may have had mood swings but no one is brave enough to tell me as with all drugs it depends on the individual, everyone wil react different

i have been on Depo for almost 3 years and i have gained a total of 6lbs 'cause of 'the shot'.
i did much research and spoke with several doctors prior to my decision to use Depo. the general concensus was that there is nothing 'harmful' about missing/not having a period. Depo stops a woman from ovulating which also stops the fluctuation of progesterone and estrogen in the system which is one of the major links to cervical and breast cancer. so actually Depo has less liklihood to cause cancer then the pill. also, women that have had several children (ie. 8, 9, 10 children) are less likely to have cervical cancer then those who haven't. a woman who has had 10 children close together probably hasn't had a period in 10 years...between gestation and breast-feeding (if that was something she did)...when i was pregnant and breast-feeding i didn't have a period for 2 years. i am confident in my decision to take Depo...the 'no period thing' is just a side benefit. those who say its unnatural just haven't done thier homework on the subject. you're only as old as you feel..............so how old do i feel Now that food has replaced sex in my life, I can't even get into my own pants.

Technically this could be true especially for breast cancer and ovarian cancer but not so for cervical cancer as there is a a very strong link (proven) that cervical cancer us caused by HPV virus which is a type of genital wart virus, the hormones just increase growth rate in cervical cancer. Women who have a lot of children close together with one partner would indeed have a much smaller risk of cervical cancer so long as the partner had never been incontact with this HPV virus. The more sexual partners you have non barrier protected sex with the higher you risk of cervical cancer.

I was put on Depo as a treatment of my endometriosis. My gyn at the time said it would be good as it would stop my periods, which were very heavy and VERY painful.
Well, I bled like a stuck pig for almost 3 mos. straight due to that shot, so it turned out it did, for me, the exact opposite of what my gyn and I were hoping to accomplish. All women are different - some women have no problems on Depo, some have many problems. What sucks is that it's a 3 month shot so if you turn out to be one it doesn't work well for, you're stuck for 3 months. Another thing about Depo is that the longer you're on it, the longer it usually takes to begin ovulating after you stop it. So if you've been on it for years and years and then go off of it wanting to get pregnant within the next few months, there is the chance you'll have trouble conceiving. I know a girl who was on it for 5+ years and finally went off it wanting to get pregnant, and it's been almost 5 years now and no luck. Her gyn said some women just don't ovulate normally afterwards if they'd been on teh shot for a considerable length of time. Just another factor to consider when weighing the options for birth control. I do also know of plenty of ladies who love the shot though!

reading all these posts about how women out on weight while on provera i decided to weigh myself ( i NEVER weigh myself ) I've actually lost 4 pounds since the last time i was weighed at the doctors hmm I don't trust putting something like that in my body. Prefer the pill/condom thing.
the pill is still hormones but delivered in a different way, so taking the pill is still "putting things like that" into your body. Another thing about Depo is that the longer you're on it, the longer it usually takes to begin ovulating after you stop it. So if you've been on it for years and years
i think there is a new study being undertaken at the minute trying to get some more data regarding this, But your right i know someone who was only on it for a year and she has had a nightmare concieving and is now having fertility treatment to stimulate ovulation.

A couple of years a go at the US Conference on AIDS, a doctor presented a study stating that Depo can increase your risk for getting HIV because of the thinning of the vaginal walls and break through bleeding.
I wish I still had the info the dr presented. She was a doctor that specialized in HIV and women. It was veryyyyy interesting. Basically, she was saying that researchers don't do enough to study the effects of birth control and hormone replacement therapy on women with HIV and in the prevention of HIV. In HPV, generally, the type that causes gential warts, isn't the same that causes cervical cancer but its possible for a woman to have both strains.

I've never heard the link of HIV transmission before, that sounds plausible though. I don't think any GP or family planning clinic would prescribe such a methord of birth control to someone having casual sex, or in a situation that would make them more susceptible to sexually transmitted diseases. The correct thing would be for both partners to be fully screened for std's before stopping using condoms, unfortunatly this doesn't happen, probably more due to stigma of std's. I think two of the strains of HPV are linked to cervical cancer, but your right the one strain that causes genital warts doesn't increase your risk of abnormal cells developing.

The Depo shot is not worth it! I got it a few times after I had my son and it seemed to make my periods worse. I didn't gain any weight, but I think I was on my period for almost a month!!
