Be direct.

A rant about answering questions.

I'm a manager. Today I asked an intern if he could work late on Friday because we're going to be short staffed. (I gotta go to Denver to see Prince, after all!!!) Anyway, he tells me that he has another job, and he's already usually late when he leaves here at 5:00 because traffic is so bad in L.A. on Friday nights. And blah blah blah for 2 minutes. ARRGGGHHHH. And he never actually answered the question. It was a yes or no question. Just say yes or no. That's all I'm looking for. If I need an explanation, I'll ask, "Why?" THEN you can launch into the extensive explanation. But first, JUST ANSWER THE FUCKING QUESTION!!!! Arrrrrgggghhhhh!!!!!

Times like these, I'm in complete agreement with Anxiety's not a team player thread. If I could do it all by myself, I would!

Thank u!

You sound like a good manager to me. You have to be direct when you are in a management position. If you're not people will run over you.

See, this is why team-player attitudes fail every time.

You should either micro-manage or be a tyrant. Or an even more popular management approach, do both at the same time. nod

Apparently, you know my boss. biggrin

But seriously, it's an easy techinique to have people not be as upset with you so much when you say no. I almost ALWAYS explain why I have to say no when I can't accomodate someone's request. But I would actually say "I'm really sorry, but I can't and let me tell you why" so that there would be no quetions as to whether or not I could do what was asked of me. That's why I'm a great manager. wink

I hear ya! Sometimes I want to strangle some people who just don't listen.

I have these invoices to pay and evey time I send them off they get messed up. I have repeatedly left explicit instructions on how to handle it. I thought I'd get ahead of the game by asking someone to take care of it personnally. Today I received several calls letting me know that these instructions went ignored...AGAIN. So I called the person who was supposed to "personally" take care of these to find out that he didn't. And what he meant was blah blah blah. He actually suggested I send them in and get the checks sent back to me so I can mail them out myself. mad

Yeah, unfortunately I can't do it all by myself. Paperwork mounds here daily. I'm already spending upwards of 50 hours a week here. I don't mind, because I came into a role that had been neglected for a long time -- basically for the 2 years I was gone. I'm bringing in an almost entirely new staff. So far, that aspect looks pretty good. But the people that were here when I arrived were hired under an administration that just didn't care. As a result, they're rather non-motivated, to put it nicely.

Really? I'm not scary. By sarcasm is sometimes misinterpreted, but I'm VERY laid back. That's why I was venting here. The intern who frustrated me had no idea that he did! I'm actually a really nice boss. The director I work for is all about limiting what our interns can do, and I'm all about letting them do as much as possible. I think the more responsibility they have, and the more they are empowered to make decisions, the happier they are, and the better they work. It's win-win. I much prefer that to constantly telling them what the cannot do.
