Why do people (women mostly*) read crap magazines?

Magazines like Heat, Chat, Closer. Basically if you're in the States, you probably don't get these, something similar though probably. Why are women so fascinated in reading about B & C-list celebrities visiting a tanning shop, or drinking coffee outside Starbucks, or walking there dog in the park, or shopping for underwear?

What's the fascination? and what do you get out of reading stuff like this? I mean, who gives a shit that Geri Halliwell has her boobs back? it's not important at all. it's not like she's going to develop talent too.

i noticed a bunch of women at work discussing Kate Beckinsales smeared fake tan today, it was like the crime of the century or something to them. Bitching away they were, all older fatter and uglier. I guess it made them feel good. rolleyes

* - admittedly some men read that shit too.

I'm serious! it does my head in. i know a girl of 25 who doesn't know who preceded Bush and Blair in their respective offices. She never watches the news or reads a newspaper, she is six months pregnant though. I guess her kid will just have to educate herself unless she wants to become the worlds foremost expert on Justin Timberlake, David Beckham or Jade Goody.

you see mark people like us who like to read about celebrities don't need to worry about who proceeded bush or blair or whatever the bollocks you're talking about because there will always be people like you to educate us in such matters if or when the time comes for us to need to know, but what is important right now in our irhead world isn't "who's running for president" but "how much does geri weigh right now?" and "is blue the new black?"

i only really have professional journals and magazines

I can understand why people buy them, i suppose it's a little bit of escapism.

The only magazine I read with any regularity is Entertainment Weekly and you are right it is crap.
In spite of the cost of living, it's still popular.

Case

Men read crap magazines too. Maxim, GQ and Esquire are some of the biggest rags I know. Notice how NONE of those magazines are aimed at working class men? NONE!

I read all sorts of magazines. My husband says I am addicted to the feel of the paper on my fingers lol but I like reading US and People and all when I deal with real problems people have day in and day out. I also read books constantly-fiction, non-fiction, theology, poetry, etc. NO ROMANCE NOVELS --yuck. Plus, you never know where a sermon illustration might come up--though peoples boobs has never really been a good one.

IN OTHER WORDS..mostly I read magazines to escape and empty my mind.

Up till about 2 years ago I hadn't had a magazine subscription since I was a teenager, and those were Sassy and Spin. These days I'm reading Bust (which is a sorta feminist hipster mag) and Entertainment Weekly which I enjoy perusing on lazy Sundays cause it takes no thought whatsoever. I don't watch tv really, so it's my equivalent of a cheesy afternoon movie or something.

Anxiety

i have a subscription to entertainment weekly redface it's good toilet reading.

i also read the new yorker and the believer, which i think are two of the best magazines out there. bust is pretty cool too, though it's gotten sooo glossy over the past couple of years.

I admit - when I drop by someone's house & I see an Enquirer sitting on the table, I'll pick that mutha up & leaf through it sad I don't buy them though, but I guess if I pick it up I'm just as bad.

The only crap reading I do on a regular: Allure, Essence & InStyle mags - LOVE EM boxed
