A friend of mine gave away the Crying Game's surprise. But, I kept thinking how I wouldn't have been surprised at all if she hadn't told me. I live in NY. I see this on the subway every day. biggrin

The Godfather Part 2...Fredo getting whacked in the fishing boat from his own brother's instructions. Micheal becomes evil personified. Incredible ending...they should have left it there...GF 3 was such a letdown.

There are a lot of good endings to great movies and I think people are doing an excellent job of listing them. My candidate for best surprise ending is from a terrible movie:

Sleepaway Camp

Terrible movie, but man...that crazy ass ending. Anyone seen it?

Memento - my brain must have been on vacation that night, because I absolutely did not see Teddy's explanation coming. In retrospect it seems blindingly obvious, of course - and it can be interpreted in several ways...

I'd also have to mention the ending of Insomnia (Norwegian version) - not because it was shocking, or came out of nowhere, but because it was so bleak and amoral.

Fight Club. That seriously fucked with my head the first time I saw it.

American Beauty. I didn't expect him to die, even though he says so when the movie starts. redface Same goes for Under the Cherry Moon and Untamed Heart. Damnit, why do people have to DIE at the end of a good movie?!?!?

I just saw "Secret Window"...figured out the ending about halfway thru, but still kept telling myself I was wrong... lol

I thought Secret Window was too predictable, the only reason I stayed to watch the end was to see Johnny Depp..

Fight Club

The Usual Suspects

Arlington Road

Se7en, I didn't think the head in the box was a surprise but I was surprised when Brad Pitt shot the killer, you sort of expect the cop do the 'right' thing at the end

Donnie Darko was just a surprise through out the whole film

I was thinking the same thing about American Beauty! I really thought the main character wouldn't reveal the ending in the first minute of the film...

OMG! I totally forgot about that movie. Actually, SleepAway Camp III was quite good, campy but fun.

By the way, I recently drove on a street called Julie Lane, which right in the middle of the street it suddenly turned into Wellby Way... eek
