An excellent thriller, with more twists to turn your soul (and your stomach, by the way), the film features great performances and a complicated plot which culminates in an extraordinary ending. Set in the 1950s, Harry Angel (Mickey Rourke) is a private detective hired by Louis Cypher (Robert De Niro), a mysterious man with a distinct resemblance to the devil. Louis Cypher wants Angel to find a singer, Johnny Liebling/Favorite, apparently with an outstanding debt to pay. What starts out as a regular ‘missing-persons’ case soon develops into an exciting but gory decent into the world of murder, voodoo and black magic in the swamps of Louisiana. ‘A haunting, stylish nightmare...’ (Newsweek). When the film was released, the publicity material blared ‘Harry Angel is searching for the truth... Pray he doesn’t find it !’. Obviously Hollywood’s very loose take on the Faustian myth, as opposed to Goethe’s work. Warning: not for the faint-hearted.

performances were ok....

the ending was ... almost there...

I just think it should have been tighter, that's all.
