Spike Lee- Very underated filmmaker?

What is ur fav Spike lee movie and why? Infact, do u like Spikes films or do u think he is a white hater? Better then tarantino?

Movies to consider:-

1)Shes gotta have it (in black and white)
2)School daze (the film/musical set in a black collage
3)Do the right thing (my personal fav- movie is funny AS WELL as having something to say 'bout society)
4) Mo better blues (jazz)
5) Jungle fever (Wesley Snipes has an interacial relationship)
6) malcom x
7)Crooklyn (not well known at all this one)
8)Clockers (co produced/written with martin scorsese)
9) Girl 6 (Phone sex- prince songs
10) He got game (Basketball- 2nd fav movie of mine)
11) Summer of sam
12) Bamboozled (the minstral show with a serious Damon wayans- this film should be seen by all- even the dancing is great!- 3rd fav

any more?..... (Check out the body of work he has done-virtually all those movies r very powerful and funny too-some of them he even wrote singlehandedly!

personally I think guy is a genius filmmaker/writer/producer that has been unfairly criticized by the media 4 his supposed white hatings in his films and his nigger loving etc.....he may come across as arrogent (if interesting) in interviews, but ALL his films really r worth seeing and now they r hard to find as after "malcolm x" in 1993 (i think), people just ignored his films in general!

Films like "he got game" "Summer of sam" and "Bamboozled" r must see films from LATER in his career-alot of people seem to think they don't even exsist?

Iam no arty film critic, but his films do make u think! Not all of his films r great, but all r interesting in their own right.....

I know Spike and Quintin Tarantino do not get along (ask Samuel l jackson) and I like Quitins films- but Spike is criminally underated whilst quintin gets put in the spotlight! "Do the right thing"- before other ghetto movies came out, wasn't just a breath of fresh air, it was possibally the most important film to come out in the 80's period!

U like spike- got a fav movie- better then Quintin, like John singletons work better?

"better than Tarantino" should not be the measure, I'm afraid neutral

Yes, Spike is incredibly underrated. Sure he flys off the track sometimes, but when he does something brilliant people let his politics/personality get in the way.

And no, he doesn't "hate Whites" - that some stupid shit. If he truly hated White people he'd be in the wrong business & would have gone nuts years ago, I assure you. There's a difference between "hate" & "criticism", good God...

Fave Spike film: I'm still in love w/ School Daze mushy
heart prince I never met you, but I LOVE you & I will forever!! Thank you for being YOU - my little Princey, the best to EVER do it prince heart

i've enjoyed all of his films, but my recent favorite is 25th hour. awesome film, first to show 'ground zero' since the cleanup, so many nuances and great acting.

i was hooked on She's Gotta Have It.

with a couple noted exceptions (25th Hour, Do The Right Thing, Malcolm X) his films are uneven yet ambitious.....he has yet to achieve a consistent artistic stride (due to imho his big arse ego).....

wink

I like his films, especially Do the Right Thing.

He is not a white hater. Ridiculous.
When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.

My own top five of his movies are as follows:

MALCOLM X
Do the right thing - Buy the Crieterion Collection DVD of this movie just to watch the outtakes and Making of features on the second disc.
Clockers- if the term underated had more meaning, it would follow this movie to death.
Get On the bus: The focus on the friendships and enlightment of some of the brothers riding along solidify this movies brilliance.
Crooklyn: a very sweet movie and another " underated one ".

I love Spike Lee´s films. And for those who think he lost it
long ago, well , he just made his best film 2 years ago and
it´s called "25th Hour". That film along with Do the Right Thing
are his masterpieces, imo.

I didn't like jungle fever...but i guess it wasa big social thing ten years ago. A bit sensationalist. I really liked Crooklyn.

His films are great...he's so pretentious though...I can't watch his interviews. "I'm the intellectually enlightened and all else in the world cannot compare"...that's what I get from
him.

Then again....do I get into film at all? hmmmmm

Seen it, wasn't exactly impressed. In fact, I've seen all of Spike's movies.

Well, if you were to breeze through your local Blockbuster like I did today & notice that 95% of Black films on the shelves have to do with drugs, killing, rapping & booty shaking you might understand his p.o.v. sigh I'm not saying Spike should act "pretentious" but he's doing what a LOT of people won't do & have no interest in - bringing intelligent & diverse images of Black people to the medium. He also has a huge body of work, much of which is incredible, so he has a LOT to be proud of...
