Maaaan, I really miss this stuff.

For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, kasha varnishkes is this stuff called "kasha" (which is kinda like this gooey buckwheat/oatmealy stuff that kinda tastes like stuffing, sorta) mixed with bowtie pasta (which i think is the "varnishkes"), and then topped with mushroom gravy.

When I lived in NYC, I'd get this stuff all the time at Veselkas on 2nd Avenue or at Gourmet Garage in SoHo. I can't find it ANYwhere here in Chicago...and I been lookin'! I'm about to fix my own kasha varnishkes, but my last attempt to cook up kasha ended in tragedy, so I'm a little hesitant....

Any other fans of this yum-yum-yumminess?

I've never heard of it. But it sounds like a very yummy plate of brown and beige mush.

I was imaging like 3 bow tie pasta pieces to a cup of mush and smothered in gravy. That doesn't look like that at all!

you don't gotsta put the gravy on it, it's just kinda the regular way it's served - with a little cuppa mooshroom gravy to pour on it.
