How come People Don't Wear Seatbelts?

I used to get sad when I read in the newspaper that someone has died in a car accident due to not wearing a seatbelt. Now when I read articles, I get angry, because I'm tired of hearing about how the other passengers that lived were wearing seatbelts and the ones that died were not wearing them. That's not enough to make people put on their seatbelts? What is it gonna hurt just to put it on? I know that in "some" cases seatbelts have failed ,but for the most part... they really do save lives. What made me think of this is this girl I went to school with died in a car wreck not too long ago...she wasn't wearing a seat belt and her mother was...her mother lived. The same thing with these 4 boys around the ages of 19-21...none of them were wearing seatbelts and they all died. sad But the passengers in the other car involved were and they lived. It's always young people too. cry I know it's not just young people who don't wear their seatbelt, but just people in general. Do most of y'all wear seatbealts? I know I never go anywhere without it, or locking my doors.

Cuz some peeps are friggin ignorant, especially when it comes to child safety in a car. Those air bags can damage and mainly kill a child. You can replace an airbag but you cannot get that dead child back.

Those that don't wear seatbelts can get thrown from a vehicle and die on impact.

It is the law where I live that one has to wear a seatbelt or face a fine, demerits.

I wear my seatbelt all the time. I have a cousin who was just 16 when he was thrown from his vehicle and is now 46 and has been paralized from the waist down for the past 30 years. Life has been hell for him, but many people never give it a thought. The truth of the matter is that many people don't think our rules and laws apply to them. For example, how many times a day do you see drivers that never signal, never come to a complete stop and never look in their blindspot? I see this shit everyday and I wonder how I'm still alive. Think about never getting an erection again, or urinating like normal people do. I think it's high time that people get off their fucking cell phones, turn down the car stereo just a little and put the damn seatbelt on and drive a little more carefully, if not for your sake, for the sake of everyone else on the roads and sidewalks. These idiots may never hurt themselves, but they will eventually hurt someone else.

I have seen people:

Bitching while driving,
Putting makeup on,
Talking on the cell phone,
Drinking coffee;
Combing their hair,
Lighting a cigarette,
and I saw a guy shaving using his shaver in his mirror omg

Some drivers seatbelt themselves but not others in their cars.

Some people think they are invincible and don't need seatbelt.

I always wear my seatbelt, i'm not taking any chances. i remember i saw a pic at rotten.com of a guy who was in an automobile accident, it wasn't pretty at all. His body was all twisted and stuff.

i wear my seatbelt religiously.

i have broken 2 windshields with my head

- one when i was pretty young, i'd say 5 or 6, and i remember clearly i was STANDING UP on the floor up front, in the car with my older cousin and she had to stop quickly. crack.

- two, when i got in the car with my friend (i was 15) and the seatbelt was broken in the passenger side, i know because i tried to put it on. another car turned illegally in front of her and we hit him full speed. CRASH. ouch. i looked like the elephant man (no joke).

I wear my seatbelt everytime. nod And when I have passengers, they MUST wear theirs as well. I won't move the car until they do.

People just feel invincible I guess. sad

I would rather be badly injured than dead. There is no question in my mind about the value of safety belts in autos. Inevitably, the failure to wear a safety belt is sheer laziness and stupidity. Any further discussion of the matter is irrelevant.

I don't wear seatbelts, never have, never will...
I find them too confining and restictive and feel that in case of an accident,
the locks will jam, and i'll be stuck. I also have a touch of claustrophobia (sp?)
It's the law 'round here, but it's my choice also.

But, I do make sure my kids wear them.
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

I've been using a seat belt since '88 when I got rear ended by some fool. I was at a complete stop, and the car behind me couldn't have been going any more than 30, but it made me think of what could happen if the situation was a little different.

I always buckle up. Wearing a seatbelt is not about making a choice, it is the law and the penalty for not doing so is $220.00 here in Victoria and the loss of 3 demerit points. It's been proven time and time again that seatbelts & child restraints save lives. The use of a seat belt has been found to decrease the risk of being killed or seriously injured in an accident by around 40%. It saved my life and the lives of 3 of my friends back in 1999 when we had a head on collision with a semi-trailer. Ouch!!!!

Totally agree, Chrissie...it also saved the life of my brother I think when he drove into a tree drunk - if it hadn't restrained him he would have gone headfirst into the tree through the windscreen sad

I totally agree with Revolution. All you ever hear is talk about seat belts saving lives but what about the cases where people would have been injured by wearing them. For example, when I was about 5 years old, me and my grandma were hit by a drunk driver. If my grandma would have been wearing her seat belt she would have lost her left leg because that's the side we were hit on and she would have been stuck there and her leg would have been crushed. It should be a personal choice and not a law.

Why is it that the law in my state says I can ride my motorcycle without a helmet but I have to wear a seat belt in my car? That's a bunch of BS!

Freedom of Choice!!!

Because you doing it increases insurance costs for the rest of us! The cases of seat belts harming people is less than 1%. Odds are, if you are not wearing your seatbelt, you WILL get hurt far worse.

A stand-up comedianne in Austin once told me that she had Sam Kinison in her car. He refused to wear his seat belt, exclaiming "when its your time, its your time".

Sam was killed a year later in an auto accident that he would've survived, had he been wearing his belt. His last words, according to his brother, were "..but its not time!"

Me doing what increases insurance costs? Not wearing my helmet or not wearing my seat belt? What are these laws meant to do? Save lives or keep insurance costs down? If they are meant to save lives than wearing a helmet on a motorcycle should be law! Correct?

Most states that allow people to ride without a helmet require the drivers to sign waivers. First off, the driver must sign a waver bypassing certain treatments at hospitals, since those injuries take up a massive amount of time and manpower away from those whose injuries weren't from being a moron.

Second, most of the insurance companies will then refuse to insure you after your first accident. And yes, the premiums go up for everyone. The same principle is in effect for those not wearing seat belts, only you don't have a law allowing you to do so.

Look, if you wanna be a Darwin award contestant, be my guest. Just do so in a way that doesn't affect my insurance premiums, like playing in traffic or handling cobras or something.

nod I always keep a pocket knife in my glove-box....just in case that does happen. But what are the chances of the seatbelt getting stuck compared to the seatbelt actually saving your life.
