Changing Your Name

Do you like your name? Do you feel that it "fits" you? Ever thought about changing it and, if yes, what would you like to change it to?

(Mochalox's thread made me think of this... )

Me, I've never liked my name. I hate the way people extend the "eeeeer" at the end when they say it. Though, I do think that it fits me. When I was about 12 or 12 I wanted to change my name to something "exotic"... lol... never could think of anything, though.

I'd change my real name to Desdemona. But unfortunately, my mama loved Fleetwood Mac and my real name is Rhiana (I know it's not Rhiannon, but that's where they got it from). And I hate it...with a passion mad

A while back, my mom and I were going to change our last names to my middle name (and then I wouldn't have a middle name anymore, because it would become my last name), because she had remarried and redivorced when I was a kid, and neither of us have much to do with my birth father either....so we figured since my mom chose my middle name when I was born, it would be kinda cool and appropriate to make that our new "family" name. Never quite panned out, but it was a nice idea.

I've considered changing my first name because of its Biblical roots, and that it means "gift of God." I left the Catholic church several years ago and am now an atheist.

Also, it's way too common. It became popular in the 1970s, when I was born, and remains popular to this day. Every year it's among the top ten (maybe even top five) male baby names. I spent most of my elementary school years being known as "Matt C." to avoid confusion with other Matthew/Matt classmates. I remember one year when I attended summer Bible school for a week, and every male student in my class was named Matt. I kid you not.

However, I've decided that changing my first name would be too much of a hassle, and it'd feel strange to lose the only first name I've ever had. So I'm keeping it.

I've thought about changing my middle and last names at other times, but I'm too lazy to type out those stories right now. In any event, I currently have no plans to change either of them.

I've always liked my name, and even moreso once becoming an adult...Yes, there's the occasional misspelling of Bryon mad wink...but other than that, I think it's a cool name.

You don't come across many Byrons very easily in life... *smile* (and yeah, I can already hear the chorus of "Thank God for that!"..lol)

Sag... I was going to call you this morning on my way out the door, but it was a tad to early... then later, I was going to call and leave you a message to say this:

Thank you. I am so glad that I called you last night. The past three or four days I've been a hideous mess, emotionally, which turned myself into a physical mess (not cleaning my hair, throwing on any thing that happens to be within reach, regardless of whether or not it matches, sleeping the moment I get home and being outright nasty and short with those around me, if they happen to get into contact with me... not returning calls, etc.).

This morning I woke up refreshed and a few things that you said during our conversation (which I doubt you'd think would mean anything to anyone) really had me going, and I woke up a new person and actually cleaned my hair (WOW) and dressed like the "normal" Heather would and looked at life differently.

So, you... I thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for being you. smile

I was going to do that when I was a teenager... well, not make my middle name my last name, but grab another from a couple of men who were more of a father to me. For sort of the same reason, or similar reason, you and your mother were considering it. John Kennedy and Michael Kincaid. Two very wonderful men.

Looking at it now, my mother and I decided on Kincaid, well... it doesn't flow very well now that I look at it. And, later in life, one of my very good girlfriends had the last name of Kincaid.

When I was very young I sooooo badly wanted to be named Kimberly, like Kimberly in Diff'rent Strokes.
And once when iI was 19 or so my friend Rick and I talked about moving to California and changing our names just for fun. I was gonna name myself Stella.
And shortly after that I toyed with the idea of making people call me Carrie Ann instead of just Carrie, but luckily realized that would be really annoying.

So now I'm just Carrie. And it suits me. I think.

It's only recently that people have been saying that I have a nice name and making me feel like I'm different.....but in a good way. smile

I hate my name too. It's Tiffany. And it DOES NOT fit me at all. And then of course you automatically get the nickname "Tip" along with it, and that's just as bad. One year in high school, there were like 3 other Tiffanys in one class...and I hated that. The name just reminds me of a "mall" girl. barf

I've never had a problem with my first name, Tracy I think does suit me..

However, I always HATED my middle name, of course, it is better to have a middle name you don't like as opposed to a first name, as no-one really pays attention to the middle name.

My middle name is Gwen, and as I've grown older, I definitely don't hate it as much as I used to... now I say, if it is good enough for Gwen Stefani, who am I to complain?!

You could start using your middle name - what is it???

My first names are Simon James. I quite like them.
Some people call me Si - I like that too.

I love my name, and I think it fits me - the funny thing is that I never had an official switch to 'Pam'. I was called Pamela up until junior high, when kids just started calling me Pam out of the blue. (Lazy teenagers!) It stayed that way, and now I introduce myself as such just to make it easier. However, my sisters call me Pamela, and the rest of my relatives call me Pammy.

I loooove Pamela Anderson, so I'm okay that we share a name... though it used to bug way back when when I was flat chested and I would get unkind comments about it.

I don't want to change my last name once I marry. It would be like losing something, especially since it's the only thing that REALLY 'proves' my Japanese heritage. My parents had only girls, and my father's brother has one son, so it's upon my cousin to carry the last name.

One of my professors changed her last (married name) to her middle name, and once she and her husband had children, the boys all received her husband's last name and the girls received her "new" last name. It was so that years and generations in the future, it would be easy to track the lines, and so women would not get lost (since they took their married last name).

make sense? it does to me, but I'm three sheets to the wind... so I dunno...
I mean, like, where is the sun?
