There was a 7" shaped picture disc released for Purple Rain (the single), but I've recently stumbled across pictures about a picture disc for the album.

Now, doing a search for these doesn't bring up a lot of information. The only solid proof I have that it exists are in the three links above. However, Prince Vault doesn't list any releases on picture disc for the album at all. I know PV isn't infallible in terms of release information, but it is generally pretty comprehensive which makes me think that maybe this release is unofficial.

Having collected Prince vinyl for the past 20+ years, the fact that I've not seen this or heard of it until now is further indication of it's unofficial status.

Is there anyone here who is able to shed some more light on this release and confirm whether or not it is an official WB release?

That site shows the Mexican one, but I don't see anything about the one with English text.

I'm puzzled by it as well. My local store (in the US) called his distributors , after he has seen it on their list , but was told that they don't actually have it. He also told me that he has seen a video online of some fan getting it in the mail and opening it to show it .

I found a few sites(all of them European sites) that have it listed as a pre-order, which cnfused me even more.

I personally don't think it is legit, since they will be releasing the remastered version soon and it doesn't make sense why they would release a picture disc a few months before that, but I could be wrong.

A hardcore Prince collector who's also done some work with Warners saw a box of these 2017 picture discs in a Warners office, so it's safe to say that it's official. There are a lot of "unofficial" copies of the Mexican picture disc.
