FOR SALE: Original lyric lines and „SLAVE“ signature by PRINCE & THE NPG, Dec. 1995

These authentic signatures by PRINCE and his NPG band date back from 9 December 1995. On that day, while at Paisley Park, Prince printed out the lyrics for Joan Osborne’s hit „One Of Us“. He then noted the line „JOAN OSBOURNE’S [sic] ONE OF US RULES“ seven times along the sheet’s edges. The accuracy in Prince’s writing has often been questionable. In this case, he misspelled Osborne’s surname, erroneously adding the letter „u“ between „o“ and „r“ in each case. In addition, Prince noted and signed the following lines:

„All that glitters ain’t gold!?
Whoever, whatever, however –

Emancipate the slave!
SLAVE“

Once Prince’s text was complete, he asked The NPG to put down holiday greetings and to sign these. Among the group was Prince’s dancer and later first wife, Mayte Garcia.

Black and white xerox copies of this Christmas card were given out to the small audience that witnessed his final open Paisley Park session of the year. Online, fans commented on this particular concert AND the autographs in question, but nobody knew anything about the fate of the original signatures.

To this day, this is the only known document in which Prince acknowledges Joan Osborne, while also hinting at the conflict with his former record company, Warner Brothers Records: He quotes a line from his own song, „Gold“ and signs as „SLAVE“. The handwriting is two-colored – with Prince’s lines all in purple and all the others in black ballpen ink. Prince himself threw this page away, but a studio employee picked it up and sold it to me amongst other goodies back in 1996.

While Prince still signed (until the late 1990s), it was extremely unusual for him to do so with anything other than his original name „Prince“ or his trademark symbol glyph. On this text page however, Prince chose to sign as „SLAVE“ (of his contract record company). He did so in the same manner in which he scribbled that word on his cheek for public appearances between 1994 and 1996, writing from right to left, rather than doing so from left to right. The letter "V" appears elevated between "A" and "E".

Dimensions: 11.1 inches x 8.6 inches

I am also offering another Prince signature from 1992 these days, one which he gave to "Diamond and Pearl" at the time. To see pictures of both, the autographed book page and the signed certificate of authenticity that comes along with it, please follow this link:
