If that's the case then 99% of the people on this site have no right to critique anybody for anything, and this site will be a ghost town. Yet, for others who are paid to critique these things their opinions are held in some esteem by a lot of people here, yet they have no recording contracts, they don't perform on award shows, they don't have videos or cd releases....

hey, people are free to say whatever they want shrug i don't expect folks to take my opinions seriously

Riiiight.
and i don't take many of the opinions here seriously.

Janet's performance was just that... "a performance"

She is one of the last true entertainers. Shouldn't we value and appreciate that in an age of lackluster music and artists? Who else really put on a performance on the BET awards?? Usher. Ludacris, Lloyd banks, Jay z??

Why is it that Janet is being made an example of. What if Madonna had shown her breast at the superbowl. Do u think that a white breast would have caused as much outrage, I think not. America was outraged becoz just 50 yrs ago a black woman pulling a so-called "stunt" like this would have been lynched. Nobody seems 2 remember that during her superbowl half time per4mance of rhythm nation, the word's injustice & racism were be shouted out in protest. Isn't it ironic...looking back.

Isn't it amazing that janet has already hit PLATINUM w/ damita jo...even w/ a right wing agenda to bring her down! I think we should all be singin her praises. After all, she is one of the most kind hearted and generous artist's. Shame on those whom paint a tainted picture of this beautiful soul. Your negativity speak's the truth of whom you really are.

Does anyone remember the backlash Madonna suffered after Sex/Erotica/Body of Evidenece? She was raked through the mud for going to far. Everyone called her carear over. Only difference was Erotica is a solid album probably one of her best. Even to this day, if you watched the 20/20 interview, they still ask her if she regerts anything she did. Like the media wants her to appoligize for it. It's not a matter of race, it's not a matter of time. Maddy did it 12 years ago. It's a matter of you had to buy Erotica/Sex/or a ticket to Body of Evidence. Anyone could have seen Janet's breast on the news. Most people missed it the first time it was played live.
You CANNOT use the name of God, or religion, to justify acts of violence, to hurt, to hate, to discriminate- Madonna

Yes, she sure is becoming a joke and it's a shame because she has many fans who love her and she seems so sweet. She really needs to take a step back and figure out where she wants to go with her career. She's almost 40, so she has to stop acting like Britney Spears. She has to stop doing the same old dance moves and she needs a stylist too. Seriously!! She wears the same type of clothes every time we see her. She also needs to start singing and stop lip-syncing to everything. If I were Janet, I would take a year off and seriously contemplate my life and future. If she contines with all this boring shit, she will become a laughing stock just her brother.

well, luckily for us, you are not janet. i suppose its far too easy to sit on the sidelines and critique someone else. what i don't see is your recording contract, your performances on awards shows, your videos and cd releases.

considering janet has had little to no radio airplay, her cd is doing well. not well by her typical standards and, quite honestly, not well by superstar expectations. when you've got an industry backlash against you with some kind of hypocritical point to prove, there's not a whole lot of power you have. the last thing janet should do, however, is change who she is and how she presents herself. i think its a damn shame that because janet is 38 years old people say she needs to stop being sexual. my girl is at her sexual peak right now. if she suddenly started changing how she presents herself it would just come off as desperation and y'all would call her out on that too. anyway, its kind of funny that everyone thinks her sexual flauntings are an act of desperation...she's been that way for how long now?

an even funnier thing is when prince was nasty nobody was telling him to stop. when he converted to JW most people here were bitching that he cleaned up his act, saying he lost some of what made him so great. why is it when a woman is sexual/nasty/whatever she is expected to stop at a certain age but when prince takes off his shirt in mpls a few weeks ago, everybody goes nuts? prince IS older, ya know.

Oh Sassy, you're a true fan of Janets' aren't you? Good for you. Keep it up cause she's gonna need you. wink

Well Damita Jo has shifted over a million copies - with a complete industry/radio backlash (when something like All Nite (Don't Stop) can't crack multi-format, you know something's wrong) that's hardly shabby.

Also considering 2004 marks her 20th year in the business (everyone notices that about Madonna, but seems to have selective memory when it comes to Janet's staying power), sales like that are an accomplishment indeed.

Actually, 22nd year (wasn't her first album released in 1982). And keep in mind Madonna had hits pretty much out of the box.

Yeah, you're right, I always forget that album, lol. Ok, so even if you qualify "from the beginning of the hit streak", she's still had a successful 18 years.

Thank you!!! A lot of revisionist history has happened over the past few months. People were talking like Madonna was always patted on the back. Ha!!! "Like a Prayer" has never appeared on MTV. She's been banned and censored. Once a picture of her appeared on a prominent NYC newspaper and the headline read, What a Whore!!! She was also criticized severely for her stunt back in August with Britney and Christina.

The difference is...her album Erotica was a damn good album.
American Life sucked and sold squat.

Janet...samething. "All Night" should have been her first song. If it was, things would have been a bit better. Damita Jo...it's an okay album, nothing to right home about.

The bottom line is, you can show every part of your body that you want to, if the song isn't good, the record buying public could care less. You can ask R.Kelly about that one. Look at what he did and his last album sold 5 million copies.

like a prayer has most definitely appeared on mtv, lol. and american life is a good record. the difference is that the media loved to get madonna on one of their shows BECAUSE they knew she would do something outlandish. the thing with janet was a surprise and it was a shock. now, had everybody loved it and only a few peeps complained, janet would have had the number one record with damita jo and no industry backlash would have occured. even if virgin had released the record QUICKLY after the scandalous performance it would have done well. unfortunately they sat on it and the public pretended to be traumatized and the big wigs feel burnt. now they are just making sure janet feels burnt also.

edit.
