Any Mr. Bungle fan here?

I am a new mike patton follower, i always loved faith no more, now it's like mr. bungle is one of the best bands ever! they don't follow the conventional song structures, the guys can play very well, mike patton is the man, a true genious.

P.S. Axl rose once said "Faith no more is the future of rock" and man he was right.
Incubus, Korn, System of A down, and all these nu metal bands all of them rips very much of Faith no More and Mr Bungle, they rip so much it is ridiculous, even small idiosincrasies of the vocal.

Teh last album is my least favorite, it's the more commercial.

Disco volantes is the one you are talking about, it's the more experimental.

THe debut is MR BUNGLE, it's kinda of funky and experimental.

I friend of mine has a boot of them live in first avenue, and mike patton keeps saying Prince tru the show. Maybe Prince was there!

I heard that their guitar player in none other than the enigmatic Buckethead. Has anyone else ever heard this assertion?

No, Deli Creeps (the band Buckethead plays) used to be the opening act of Mr Bungle, and they are friends. BTW, MR. Bungle players are virtuosos too, and they uses masks too. So they must get along well.

I'm surprised, I think the last album is the best one. It's a truly subversive record, it sounds more poppy than their other records but there are layers and layers of things going on in the production. Give it another spin with the headphones on. Buckethead and Patton did collaborate at a show for one of Patton's side projects, Moonraker. Moonraker is usually Patton, a DJ, & a guitar player and on Dec. 18, 2000 that guitar player was Buckethead. Interesting stuff. Seeing them (Bungle) on the California tour ranks in the top leagues of my concert experiences. No opening act, just two sets of insane musicianship. Those boys were sweatin' to approximate the California record live. I tell ya, there's a lot going on on that disc. Give it another chance.

Uh, i will try, it´s because i first listened to the 3 records int he same week, and disco volante and mrb bungle records hold up my attention very much. THe first is the funkiest, the second the most daring and the third came up as the more poppy, but i will check again later, maybe i will like more this time.

Why you don´t agree, he was kinda NOSTRADAMUS.

Mike Patton is the mind of faith no more.

And alternative metal nowadays is the most popular rock genre.

Slipknot
System Of a Down
Korn
Deftones
Incubus

are the most influential bands nowadays and all of them ripped from Mr. BUngle and Faith no More, Linking park, puddle of mud are all ripping these bands, and they are not original. So today echoes of Mike Patton can be heard on most of alternative bands, so yes, from the vocal delivery of the singer of Incubus, to the crazy instrumental of system of a down, yes, Axl Rose was right, faith no more was the future of rock. THe only problem with it is that these followers are as original as lenny kravitz so the mainstrea metal scence pretty much sucks these days.

I'm a huge Mr. Bungle fan-have all 3 albums, self-titled, Disco Volante, and California. Disco Volante I think holds up on the higher end for repeated listens given how many layers are in the music. Yes, California is on the poppier end-but it's pop with teeth. One listen to "Retrovertigo" and that's very clear. "Ars Moriendi" is like something off Disco Volante but with better production values. I love each of these albums-but all in different ways. The best thing I think they've done is that they haven't made the same album twice in any sense. Still a new exploration in music.

Now if you're a fan of Mike Patton-have you heard of Fantomas? It's Mike on vocals, Buzz from the Melvins on guitar, Dave Lombardo from Slayer on drums, and Trevor Dunn from Mr. Bungle on bass. The music is more in the vein of Disco Volante, but with a harder edge and there are no lyrics. Patton uses his voice as an instrument along with the music, and it's best described as musical chaos.

There are 3 Fantomas albums so far-Fantomas (with each song as a page as in a novel, as there are no lyrics), Director's Cut (Fantomas' interpretation of many classic movie themes, with Patton writing a few lyrical passages for some of these such as "Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer" with the lyrics: "It's either you or them") and then Delirium Cordia, which is a one track experimental concept album. No lyrics on it, but comes with a booklet with a photographic narrative that can best be described as a "dentist appointment gone horribly wrong." The music lulls you to sleep at times, like other Fantomas albums, then attempts to scare the living fuck out of you. Fantomas is best listened to on headphones-some people love it, some hate it, but it's hard to ignore it.

Faith No More I've always loved, and I agree with bands ripping them Patton in particular off, as well as Jim Martin's guitar style. I read in Guitar World a few years back on how Korn had a chord they used a lot that they named "the Mr. Bungle chord." So for better or worse (mostly worse it seems) Patton's various musical incarnations have made an impression on modern music.

Also check out ipecac.com for updates (that's Patton' label)-I believe it has info on Patton's solo albums and his multiple projects including work he's done with John Zorn. (There's a heavy Zorn influence on Disco Volante).

I'd start off with Fantomas, but Director's Cut is the only one with lyrics as I said-maybe your friend can let you borrow some. Fantomas seems best listened to as a whole though, so make sure you've got some time. Some of the stuff off Fantomas is only a minute long of chaos, then into something that's 3 minutes at the most, back and forth for a whole album, so no real individual songs. Director's Cut is the most song-based, and like I said Delirium Cordia is one track, 74 minutes I believe. All very experimental.

Let me know what you think!

Glad you like it. biggrin

Definitely good stuff to listen to on headphones by the way-brings the layers out. music

Yeah, it's really more chaotic than the direct musicianship you hear in Mr. Bungle's work, but Fantomas I've noticed has it's own area of musicianship in the way the guitars melt into Patton's voice and distortion is also an instrument as well. It's loud and a little hard to deal with sometimes for some people with Patton going insane and the guitars cranked up to full blast, but I've heard new things when I go back to it that I was surprised with.

The first Bungle album will always be a favorite for me too-I hadn't heard anything like it before-and still can't say I've heard anything with that kind of impact since Fantomas.
