Funky Drummer is just 9 minutes of dull with 30 seconds of "OH HOLY SHIT". In my opinion.
"Give It Up Or Turn It Aloose" is my favorite, followed closely by "Aint It Funky Now", live. The Last Otan Track: www.funkmusician.com/what.mp3

I'll fine tune that one a bit by saying Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose, the pseudo-live version on the 1970 Sex Machine release with Bootsy Collins. Along with: Cold Sweat Get It Together Mother Popcorn It's A New Day Superbad Soul Power Hot Pants Talkin' Loud And Sayin' Nothing The Payback Think (which is pretty much the band with Lyn Collins singing) tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

'Tis probably a better bet to select time periods rather than actual songs, as anyone's list will surely have its omissions. This period, for me at least, was 68-74. Mind you, several periods lie within this period but JB was absolutely infallible during this period. To say these grooves stank just as much now is like stating today is Monday or that Prince fans are psycho (LOL!!!) but no words describe a sound as good as one's ears...
John "Jabo" Starks and Clyde Stubblefield ARE the funkiest drummers to ever lick a skin in the history of the instrument. I won't delve into the minutia of differing lineups, tours, setlists, etc. I've heard many a funky ish in my day but no bassline will ever beat the sheer stupidity and simplicity of the 2nd (of 3 distinct bass lines) in Mind Power from The Payback album. If you must know, around the 4:30 mark after the guitar and vocal breakdown prior to Maceo's flute solo. JB, like his funk brethren Sly, also revolutionized how the organ was used to thicken a groove. I saw where someone referred to Funky Drummer as boring. Now the use of the pipes in this track are far from a snoozer. Also dig Make It Funky Pts 1-4 after he says "Mobile Gumbo." He makes the organ grunt like a half slaughtered pig. BTW, Licking Stick-Licking Stick is, IMO, the funkiest use of organ in a song, ever...and its one chord!!!! I'll stop now, as I can go on for.....whatever.. If you haven't heard the following, its ok...just don't admit it publicly Tighten Up - 8-26-68 (check Clyde's solo....) Revolution of the Mind... Escape-ism/Make It Funky..(along with EWF's Gratitiude, my all time fave live album.) Love Power Peace - all of it!!! Get on the Good Foot Rumble in The Jungle '74. Not official but damn..... Papa Don't Take No Mess Ain't It Funky Now Gimme Some More She's the One More Peas Damn Right I Am Somebody Can I Get Some Help I Got Ants in My Pants (It's Not the Express) It's the J.B.'s Monorail You Can Have Watergate Just Gimme Some Bucks and I'll Be Straight Same Beat, Pts. 1-3 Soul Power '74 Body Heat (prolly the last sick thing he did, IMO. Also check Brown Mark playing this bass line....euuuuhhhhh!) [This message was edited Mon Jun 28 16:50:53 2004 by soulive]

I dont think anyone has mentioned it yet but 'Stone To The Bone' as damn near the funkiest song ever made, for me anyway.
Closely followed by: Since You Been Gone Body Heat (Prince's favourite song to dance to apparently - I remember reading that in a real early edition of the Controversy fanzine) There Was A Time (Live) Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose Like the Stevie Wonder post from the other day, you could pick 30 or more for this post ! The Funk, the whole funk & nothin' but the funk, ya dig?!
