Joni Mitchell with Jaco Pastorius, Pat Metheny and Michael Brecker: "Shadows and Light" DVD

in the mid Seventies, Joni Mitchell began to delve into jazzier, more complex territory - it may have confused some fans of her early folk hits, but it resulted in some of her most uncompromising, challenging, and entertaining music. This concert DVD is a great 73-minute document from her '79 tour (also on CD), which finds her backed by her greatest band ever - guitarist Pat Metheny and legendary bassist Jaco Pastorius, as well as Metheny bandmate Lyle Mays (keyboards), Michael Brecker on sax, and Don Alias on drums. it's wonderful to see all these legends at the top of their game!, A great, historic performance (This is the only time they toured together)...The only complaint is that there is a little too much
crosscutting between stock movie footage, and conceptual video mixed in - the emhasis should have stayed on the concert itself...

drool Been getting into Joni. Started with Hissing Of Summer Lawns, Blue, Court And Spark, Travelogue, and just got Mingus last week. Joni worship Have seen the CD of Shadows and Light is the DVD more complete? It says on the CD I've seen that there are two tracks missing or something?

It seems that the only complete version is the Japanese Import 2 CD set: the domestic version leaves out "Free Man in Paris", "Black Crow" and "Don's Solo" , but on the other hand The DVD leaves out "Woodstock" and "God must be A Boogie Man"...confusing. But I love the DVD, because , while the CD is great, I prefer actually seeing the concert...

I just bought the Joni DVD that shows her life story. For some bizarre reason, it totally skips over The Hissing of Summer Lawns.

i love this concert too.

it's so beautiful how it starts in the sunlight and then when the evening sets in, it gets completely dark.

AMELIA is brilliant with the extra footage, made me cry.

i loved to see Joni skate on HEJIRA.

on the double CD of this concert Jaco's solo is not there, and it is also a highlight in the show for me sad
yes SIR!

I have this show on VHS. Of course it's terrific, because it's Joni. Her songwriting, composing and musicianmanship are second to none. The band on S&L is comprised completely of legends, not to mention the brilliant guest performance from The Temptations. But the video could've been a lot better - why did they cut out the encores!? It would've been so great to see Woodstock and God Must Be A Boogie Man! That intermingling with film footage worked well for some tracks like Coyote and In France They Kiss On Main Street, but totally destroyed Hejira.

smile Ndeed!! I'm still trying to decide which album is my favorite, though--lately it's been a toss up between Mingus and Hissing Of The Summer Lawns--(with Hejira just below...)

From the recent Prince interview in Guitar Player magazine:

"That's why I don't like to talk about gear. People will go out and buy that stuff thinking it's going to make them sound like me, and that's not where it's at. Go get your own stuff and come up with your own sounds. If you need a path to follow, a good place to start is by listening to Ike Turner-he was as tight as they come-or James Brown, who is all about rhythm. Put any colors you've learned from Joni Mitchell on top of that, and then you've got something!"

Mingus was my first Joni Mitchell album, and to date my favourite. Especially as the cassette copy I had had no explanatory liners, the album had such a mysterious air about it. Her jazz period was her best. God Must Be A Boogie Man is also my favourite song of hers.

Hissing Of The Summer Lawns is my fave. But I dig "Blue" as well.
