All she wanted was a cuddle with her new puppy. But in the complicated world of Britney Spears nothing is that simple. Instead, the troubled 22-year-old singer found herself at the centre of a major incident when she called at a pet shop to collect the latest member of her entourage. Spears, who is recuperating after serious knee surgery, had decided a fluffy white Maltese terrier was just the thing to cheer herself up.

There were squeals of delight as she and her mother Lynne picked up her new pet near her home in Santa Monica, California.
But as Mrs Spears drove them away, a photographer who had been waiting outside the shop claimed she had run over his foot.

Within moments, Britney and her mother were surrounded by an unwanted entourage of police, paramedics and even the fire brigade.

As the circus unfolded around them, a miserable Britney, who had to cancel her world tour last month because of her knee problems, could only sit and wait.

The first police to arrive sealed off the area.

Then more police swarmed around the shop. In the end, there were ten patrol cars at the scene.

Two ambulances arrived, brimming with paramedics. Then the local fire crews turned up.

Even when it became obvious they would not be needed they found an excuse to stay for at least half an hour.

In the midst of all the pandemonium it was left to a single female officer to ask Mrs Spears what had happened.

Once coaxed out of the car, she happily gave her version of events.

If the presence of so many officers was meant to reassure her rather fraught daughter it did not work.

Looking tired and distressed, Britney started yelling. Then she sulked. Eventually she burst into tears.

Finally, after answering the police officer's questions Mrs Spears was allowed to go.

One of her daughter's minders took over the driving.

The photographer who claimed to have been hurt was taken to hospital. It is not known whether any charges will be brought.

when she first turned 21 (when she and justin had recently split) she went on crazy drinking missions. i don't think she ever broke it down for anyone though. i wish she would. she plays it so sweet so as not to piss anyone off...uh uh. she needs to get tough and stop taking the shit.

money isn't everything and sometimes i feel bad for celebrities. i mean i'm not losing sleep or anything but i can't imagine your life long dream becoming such a pain in the ass. i think these people prep themselves for a lifetime of media circus behaviour but i don't thinkanyone can imagine the lengths it actually goes to.

Monique is beautiful! Theres nothing wrong with a big beautiful woman! I loved the Carpenters but we all saw where her diet got her.

Man, she really needs to just get away from California and New York, since these two places seem to be havens for paparazzos. I hope that this guy doesn't add to the people who are already suing her. She's being sued by some diet pill company and another company for using their "In The Zone" slogan withouth their permission. Those two lawsuits alone total almost $30 million dollars. Brit's got some dough, but anyone can end up like MC Hammer and Mike Tyson nowadays.

As much as I can't stand Britney, I actually feel sorry for her. I don't know if it was an intentional thing with the photographer but with her breaking down like that, it's obvious to me that she's going through quite a lot right now. Some of it may have been self-inflicted but she needs to stop for a moment and get herself together. This is really quite unfortunate.

She has a shelf-life, and the expiration date is closing...
