I'm watching Beat Street right now....

If you have a younger sibling or child who loves Hip-Hop, and they would like to know where Hip-Hop originated, show them this movie. This isn't exactly where it began, but it was around the time where Hip-Hop was beginning to become more than just something of a fad. No, this movie documents the era of graffitti, breakdancing, rapping, and a deteriorated-looking version of New York City (damn you, Koch!). It's a pretty cool flick! smile

'Beat Street' is one of my favorite movies.Unlike the two 'Breakin' movies (which were fun but tacky as hell) and the amateurish 'Wild Style' (which looks as if it cost $300 to make...lol),'Beat Street' is a strong, powerful film with an actual story and a great cast.I know that many folks diss this film, saying it's phony and glossy, but it's probably the only early 80s hip-hop/breakdancing/grafitti movie that I can sit through.Plus,it has a solid soundtrack.

I love Beat Street, but I would recommend "schooling" anyone with Wild Style then Style Wars.

Can't go wrong with that perfomance of Xmas Rap a/k/a Santa Rap by Treacherous Three (feat. Doug E. Fresh), though.

Wild Style is more of an authentic documentary of the early scene, Beat Street was a full blown entertaining movie.

come to think of it, I haven't seen both in ages

I don't know about House Party. By then Hip-Hop was in its golden age. I'm talking about when Hip-Hop was this underground movement coming out of NYC, just like Punk rock. It was at a time when no subway car was sacred. lol

Anyways, the thing I liked about Beat Street was that the breakers didn't resort to violence to solve their conflicts. They settled it by breakdancing. That in itself sent a peaceful message.

OK, so for those that have never seen this flick, I strongly suggest you see it soon.

I have to agree with CinisterCee with regard to Style Wars.

If you want to really get into the origins and the psyche of some everyday individuals involved with the early scene (graffiti artists, breakers, writers, MCs) from a PBS "documentary" perspective as opposed to a "movie" interpretation, I highly suggest Style Wars.

No actors or contrived story here.
