Aretha lip syncing @ the playoffs Due to my Minneapolis marathon I've been gone a few days - has anyone talked about this? How bad it was? How she started late so it was REALLY obvious? How they had to stick to wide shots b/c to show her struggling through it w/ the wide armed theatrics was just too terrible? And that her wig was bad too??!!!
WHY oh why is Aretha lip syncing?? Isn't this the same woman who filled in for Pavoratti @ the spur of the moment on the Oscars or some other award show??? 'Tis sad IMO...

Outside of our brief conversation on the Finals thread, not a word that i'm aware of. I was discussing this with a friend of mine who initially thought there was something wrong with the television broadcast. After the JJ "costume malfuntion" fiasco maybe the network was frightened that Aretha might expose her 62 year old rack. (which according to Chris Rock should "belong" to somebody) Apparently, Aretha herself was denying that it happened. Here's a press release from USA TODAY: "Natural woman", fake anthem? DETROIT (AP) — Aretha Franklin's performance of the national anthem before the decisive Game 5 of the NBA Finals was pre-recorded and lip-synched, one of the Queen of Soul's producers said. "We recorded vocals for Aretha Franklin last year at her house, in her vestibule," producer Brian Pastoria told the Detroit Free Press for a Friday story. "One of the things we recorded was the national anthem — the one that was played at the Palace on Tuesday night." A representative for Franklin did not immediately return a message from The Associated Press seeking comment. Detroit Pistons spokesman Matt Dobek, who initially asserted that Franklin sang live, said Thursday he was mistaken. "I was unaware," he said. "She did something I did not know about." The Pistons went on to beat the Los Angeles Lakers, 100-87, and win the NBA championship at The Palace of Auburn Hills. The Star-Spangled Banner was among the final tracks recorded at the 62-year-old singer's Bloomfield Hills home at extensive sessions that included her latest album and a rendition of Amazing Grace for the funeral of Whitney Houston's father. http://www.usatoday.com/l...klin_x.htm =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Welcome back and enjoy the last days on earth. It may be sadder than you think. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

Whitney Houston lip synched it too.
Depending on the logistics of it all they'll have the singer do it that way. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

Thanks for this tA, when I was in Minnie I saw a brief snippet on a sports show about it but I wasn't near the tv so I couldn't make out exactly what they were saying. The guy talking looked appalled though fake ass edit. [This message was edited Sun Jun 20 5:05:24 2004 by CalhounSq]

If you thought Aretha's anthem was bad, you might not have seen Anita Baker and Kid Rock.
America got some pretty sad vocal tributes during the finals

Anita's wasn't dynamic, but her tone was a welcome treat. Aretha's lip sync was so utterly horrible, one wondered at the time when she might have recorded it. Hard to believe she recorded it as recently as that person suggested. She did not seem too familiar with it.

This is rediculous...I just heard on my local radio that this has made International News...From Canada all the way to London...
What get me is NOBODY said a word when ReRe snatched her wig off her head during the 2003 BET Walk of Fame.. Yet the fact that she Lip-synched for 3-min made news... Get over it people...The Media ain't got shit to talk about these Damn Days.. Now ya'll KNOW what this means don'tcha? From here on out she's gonna be poked fun at when she's asked to sing at events... I'll tell ya'll this much..if Aretha DIDNT know that folks WATCHED her every Damn move,I bet she know now... I wonder if she's being advised on whether she should address this publicly or not..It's all stupid...

Now that was some funny ass shit!!! Plus the fact, everyone knows ReRe doesn't sing live unless the air conditioning is off, so it should've been a dead giveaway that she was lip-syncing if no one was sweating.

Considering who Aretha is, what she has proven over 4 decades and the fact that she recently hasn't been in the best of health... doesn't she have the right to get away with this without any bullshit? You're right Harlepolis... the media doesn't have shit to do.
