Due to my Minneapolis marathon I've been gone a few days - has anyone talked about this? How bad it was? How she started late so it was REALLY obvious? How they had to stick to wide shots b/c to show her struggling through it w/ the wide armed theatrics was just too terrible? And that her wig was bad too??!!!

WHY oh why is Aretha lip syncing?? Isn't this the same woman who filled in for Pavoratti @ the spur of the moment on the Oscars or some other award show??? 'Tis sad IMO...

Apparently, Aretha herself was denying that it happened.

DETROIT (AP) — Aretha Franklin's performance of the national anthem before the decisive Game 5 of the NBA Finals was pre-recorded and lip-synched, one of the Queen of Soul's producers said.

"We recorded vocals for Aretha Franklin last year at her house, in her vestibule," producer Brian Pastoria told the Detroit Free Press for a Friday story. "One of the things we recorded was the national anthem — the one that was played at the Palace on Tuesday night."

A representative for Franklin did not immediately return a message from The Associated Press seeking comment.

Detroit Pistons spokesman Matt Dobek, who initially asserted that Franklin sang live, said Thursday he was mistaken.

"I was unaware," he said. "She did something I did not know about."

The Pistons went on to beat the Los Angeles Lakers, 100-87, and win the NBA championship at The Palace of Auburn Hills.

The Star-Spangled Banner was among the final tracks recorded at the 62-year-old singer's Bloomfield Hills home at extensive sessions that included her latest album and a rendition of Amazing Grace for the funeral of Whitney Houston's father.

Thanks for this tA, when I was in Minnie I saw a brief snippet on a sports show about it but I wasn't near the tv so I couldn't make out exactly what they were saying. The guy talking looked appalled though

America got some pretty sad vocal tributes during the finals

Anita's wasn't dynamic, but her tone was a welcome treat. Aretha's lip sync was so utterly horrible, one wondered at the time when she might have recorded it. Hard to believe she recorded it as recently as that person suggested. She did not seem too familiar with it.
