If You Buy The New Beastie Boys Album, BE CAREFUL!!! FROM: http://www.securityfocus....04-06-19/0
It seems that Capitol Records has some sort of new copy protection system, that automatically, silently, installs "helpful" copy protection software on MacOS and Windows as soon as you insert the CD into default systems. I'm not sure exactly what it does yet, but I am sure regreting actually purchasing said media now... they don't deserve my money if they choose to pull stupid stunts like this. Installing software without your permission sounds like viral malware behaviour to me. I certainly hope the AV companies put signatures into their products for this crap. They include some sort of uninstaller buried on there for Windows, but I see no such thing for MacOS. If anyone has disassembled the aforementioned malware already and can save us some time with instructions on how to remove it... thanks in advance. Apparently, it's on the new Beastie Boys album. So if ya pop that sucker in your computer, BE CAREFUL!!!

While I haven't bought the album yet, I've read the disclaimer on the back where it gives the legal spiel about not claiming responsibility if something goes wrong when you play the CD on your computer. I'm pretty sure the true hack nerds will figure a way to disable this feature, while the rest of us will run in circles trying to remove it.

I thought you were going to say BE CAREFUL, because it's not that great an album.

Oh great, I just played this CD on a networked computer at work.
Hopefully, Copy Controlled gets me fired.

Software fuckery aside, the album is solid.

Aw well. I wasn't going to put it in my computer anyway. Thanks for the warning though.

Ya think so? I'm pretty disapointed actually. Out of all their albums, this is at the bottom of the pile with License to Ill.

I'm not saying License to Ill is bad, it's just at the bottom of the pile....a 3 star album. To the 5 Boroughs is also not bad, but it's also a three star album. To give you some reference, I give Paul's Boutique and Hello Nasty the highest ratings at 4.5 stars. . [This message was edited Fri Jun 18 1:29:09 2004 by mrdespues]

For a period piece with phenomenal success and songs like "Paul Revere", I would say the same for Licensed To Ill. I would compare 5 Bouroughs to something like Check Your Head - still solid, but doesn't top Hello Nasty. Still a little early to call though, I've only heard it twice through on shitty speakers. If you liked their song "Alive" on Sounds Of Science box set, you will dig this album's vibe.

Paul's Boutique is definately the best of all there albums. As for License To Ill, I just really dig that mid 80's old school sound.

Want a copy for your car? Use Clone CD. Open the read drive, put the disc in the drive, but don't close it! Then activate Clone CD and allow the program to close the drive. When Clone CD closes a drive, it locks it, thereby preventing Windows from activating the Copy Control program.
Then, copy as normal. | |

Hmmmm.....
Yesterday I made my own personal copy and my burner went crazy. It was making such a loud noise, unlike any other CD I've copied. Wonder if this has anything to do with it. I'm not an expert in this area so any help in finding and uninstalling this thing (if it's true) would be helpful 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

Well, sounds like I won't be picking up this CD. I like the Beasties, but I'm not gonna support them if they are gonna do sneaky shit like this (even if it is their record label, and not them). This is the equivilant of piggybacking a virus onto your computer, and I don't think it should be legal. Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. (Ecclesiastes 7:9)

FROM THE BEASTIE SITE:
a) The copy protection is in all territories except the US and UK -- US and UK discs do not have this protection on them;
b) All EMI CDs are treated this way, TT5B isn't protected in any special way; c) Beastie Boys would have preferred not to have the copy protection, but weren't allowed to go against EMI policy in these territories. I noticed the "Caution" lable on the back stating that it was being sold "AS IS" and may NOT work on your CD player- which means NO refund if it doesn't play on your player. And what's all that crap about Capitol Records isn't liable if the cd (they Sold you) tares up your CD player?! Anyways, I bought it brand new at Kmart for $10 ...and Love it. I had no problems ripping it to my harddrive, converting it to MiniDisc or MP3. I've burned it a few times and am now sharing it with the universe! {--last statement "May" be ment as a joke} Socks still got butt like a leather seat...
