I knew she went by Esther as her "religious" name but I guess she is THE ARTIST FORMERLY KNOWN AS MADONNA????!!!

Internationally well-known pop singer Madonna has announced that she has changed her name, which has become a marker throughout her career, and now demands to be called by her new Jewish name Esther. The singer who has adopted the Jewish sector "Kabbalah", revealed that she has become so affected by her religion that she felt she must change her name to go with her belief.

The well known Material Girl was named after her mother who died when the singer was young and said she wanted to be attached to the "energy" of a new name.

During an interview in the United States, the Catholic born singer said that since following the teachings of the Jewish mystical faith Kabbalah - whose principles she said were very "punk rock" and anti-establishment - Madonna has learned to follow new directions.

Adopted by gurus of popular culture, the Kabbalah, an ancient Hebrew mystical system of thought, embodies the mystical side of Judaism and teaches one to embrace small sparks of daily experiences and the seemingly insignificant moments of life.

Madonna stressed that she will not answer to her old name and will only accept being Called Esther from now on. One of the key changes to date has been her name, "I was named after my mother. My mother died when she was very young, of cancer, and I wanted to attach myself to another name.

"This is in no way a negation of who my mother is. I wanted to attach myself to the energy of a different name," Esther added.

This kind of thing has been done so many times. Madonna doesn't have an original thought left in her head. This makes me sick and only re-enforces for me just how boring and silly this woman has become.

I'm not sure how to answer this. Madonna hasn't interested me in years and IMO she just gets more and more ridiculous and boring as the years go by. I lost interest in her when she released that ridiculous Truth or Dare. She definitely had her day, but her time has come and gone and I don't think anything she's done in years has been the least bit interesting.

This story was reported last year at the time of American Life's release. I guess People got the memo a little late. Who knows if it's true, though. People is The National Enquirer on glossy paper.

June 17, 2004 -- Don't call her Madonna anymore - call her Esther. In the most bizarre name change since Puff Daddy became P. Diddy, the Material Girl has adopted the ancient Hebrew name of Esther.

The pop queen, whose six-night stand at Madison Square Garden started last night, says she's spooked by the fact that her mom, who was also named Madonna, died at the age of 30, when the superstar-to-be was 5.

"My mother died when she was very young, of cancer, and I wanted to attach myself to an other name," Madonna, 45, told ABC News.

"This is in no way a negation of who my mother was. I wanted to attach myself to the energy of a different name."

While she hasn't yet asked her friends to use the new moniker, Madonna is apparently called Esther when she studies the ancient Jewish mystical practices of Kabbalah.

"In her Kabbalah world, the leaders may call her that during spiritual services," said her spokeswoman, Liz Rosenberg.

"But while we still bow to her, we don't call her Queen Esther," Rosenberg joked, referring to the Book of Esther in the Old Testament, which tells of the Jewish wife of the king of Persia.

Queen Esther used her position to save other Jews from persecution.

It remains to be seen if Madonna's millions of fans will begin referring to her as Esther, which translates as "star."
Meanwhile, Madonna also tells ABC, in an interview airing tomorrow, that she's got her children, Lourdes, 7, and Rocco, 3, regularly doing the household chores.

"My children have to clean up their mess, clean up their rooms," she says.

Madonna, who wed British director Guy Ritchie in 2000, years after her marriage to Sean Penn fell apart, also says the key to a successful marriage is "learning to apologize."

One thing the entertainer regrets is some of her past actions on the way to stardom.

While she doesn't go into detail, she says, "I brought a lot of chaos to people's lives because of my selfish behavior."
She describes herself as "naughty child, number one," but says she now believes in the power of prayer

Prince changed his name (breifly) to screw around with a big record company that he felt was screwing him over. I thought that was a balls move but most people thought he was bonkers!

I will admit that I know nothing about the Kallblah and my post really isn't judging the religon as much as I am the somewhat fickle nature of Madonna and most other celebs. She tries on hats and this one is an odd fit. She's changing the name that has brought her fame, fortune and helped her sell out a tour within seconds for a religon that she thinks is "punk rock". My point is that people have been talking about the different effects that religon has had on both Madonna and Prince lately and as it stands, Madonna is far in the lead.
