Steely Dan is so underrated. Hard to list all my favs, but Pretzel Logic and Kid Charlemagne stand out, as does New Frontier by Fagan.

A forgotten tune on these lists is "Dirty Work"! I know Fagen doesn't sing it, but it is a great Steely Dan tune anyway!

An easier assignment and shorter list would be what songs are your LEAST favorite.
Especially on albums from Katy Lied through Everything Must Go when they decided to operate as a duo and use session players for the recordings. I'll narrow my list down to 2 favs from each of those albums: KATY LIED: Bad Sneakers Dr Wu THE ROYAL SCAM: Kid Charlemagne (Larry Carlton's solo ) Green Earrings AJA: (This is a hard one to just pick 2 from) Aja (Wayne Shorter and Steve Gadd ) Home At Last (The famous "Pretty Purdie" shuffle ) To all drummers, Steve Gadd's phenomenal drumming on the Aja cut has been transcribed (along with audio samples) here: http://www.intrepidsoftwa...gr_aja.php GAUCHO Glamour Profession (Steve Kahn's solo ) Time Out Of Mind (A happy sounding ode to smack?) TWO AGAINST NATURE Cousin Dupree (maybe she wasn't a 1st cousin ) West Of Hollywood ("I'm way deep into nothing special" Unfortunately, I see this on a daily basis here in LaLa land.) EVERYTHING MUST GO Godwhacker Pixeleen (vocal arrangements ) Donald Fagen Solo THE NIGHTFLY Maxine (one of the coolest pop tunes ever. vocal arrangement ) The Nightfly (surprised that no late night talk show host has adopted this as a theme song) KAMAKIRIAD On The Dunes Tomorrow's Girls (One of the best lines in pop music) They're mixing with the population A virus wearing pumps and pearls Lord help the lonely guys Hooked by those hungry eyes Here come Tomorrow's Girls Gotta look into the Walter Becker material. Some years ago, a friend provided me with a Dan rehearsal on cassette that i'm gonna have to dig out and transfer to CD. paligap, what's up with the new av? tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm [This message was edited Wed Jun 9 13:45:29 2004 by theAudience] [This message was edited Wed Jun 9 13:46:55 2004 by theAudience] "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. There is no such thing as a bad Steely Dan song. They're all brilliant. But favorites are probably: Bodhisattva
My Old School Parker's Band Bad Sneakers Kid Charlemagne Caves of Altimira Peg Deacon Blues Josie FM Babylon Sisters Third World Man Gaslighting Abbie What a Shame about Me Two Against Nature West of Hollywood The Last Mall Blues Beach Pixeleen And as far as Donald Fagen's solo work goes, I love IGY (What a Beautiful World), Green Flower Street, Ruby Baby, Snowbound, Florida Room, and On the Dunes. I'd love for Fagen to make another solo album, but only as long as the Dan puts out another album within the next couple of years!

Yeah, Kamakiriad is a very underrated album. Sometimes I feel like it's my little private musical secret, if you know what I mean!

"Show Biz Kids" - 'you go to lost wages'...no bridge on this one, no problem.
"Ricky Don't Lose That Number" - piano phrase taken from Horace Silver's "Song For My Father"...might be a problem. "Any Major Dude" - 'i never seen you lookin so bad, my funky one' "Monkey In Your Soul" - 'where's that fatback chord i found?' "Your Gold Teeth II" - 'throw out your gold teeth and see how they roll'...gotta love the chord changes on the piano. "Chain Lightning" - 'don't question the little man' "Throw Back The Little Ones" - 'and pan fry the big ones' "Kid Charlemagne" - 'is there gas in the car? yes, there's gas in the car'...anything Bernard Purdie plays drums on is usally damn good. "The Fez" - just a good groove. "Green Earrings" - an even better groove. "Haitian Divorce" - just because. "Black Cow" - 'drink your big, black, cow. and get outta here' "Aja" - Steve Gadd is a baaaddd man. "Peg" - De La Soul's favorite foriegn movie. "Deacon Blues" - 'they call Alabama the Crimson Tide, call me Deacon Blues' "Home At Last" - check out Purdie's underpinning swing at the 2:31 mark. Sweeeet. "I Got The News" - no explanation needed. "Josie" - a critic once described this song as a "tribute to a trouble maker"...i like that. break out them hats and hooters. "Babylon Sisters" - I don't know who plays drums on this one, but the subtle syncopation of the bass drum as the chorus comes up gets me every time. Dennis Chambers plays the version on their live album. "Gaslighting Abbie" - just cuz. "Two Against Nature" - swingin shit. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

The one and only They come up with some of the greatest storylines. Some more cryptic than others. But even when they used the tried and true subjects (found love, lost love, strange love) they do it with such an oblique and cerebral flair. Have you seen the Classic Albums - Steely Dan: AjaDVD? Some really priceless insights into that album. Especially the story behind the guitar solo on Peg. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. Some really priceless insights into that album. Especially the story behind the guitar solo on Peg. Yeah, that DVD was wild! I tripped on Donald doing the Uptown, baby! Uptown, baby! And how many vocal tracks did they make Michael Mcdonald record for" Peg"?
