Wow. I completely missed this thread. A great voice! One of my mom's favourite singers too. Thanks for leaving us with some of the best music ever Mr. Charles. Especially my favourite; "A Song for You"

A coworker announced his passing. It's such a shock even though he's lived a full life. Funny how a bunch of us reacted with such surprise, shock, and sorrow compared to Reagan's passing. Anyway, Ray Charles will complete the big band in the sky. True legend! "Funkyslsistah… you ain't funky at all, you just a little ol' prude"!

Thanks for posting that article, VinaBlue. At the time I got the news it was about an hour after his death, so the press reports were minimal with regards to detail.
This man would be on any legitimate musical Mount Rushmore, if there were such a thing. Just as James Brown is The Flashpoint of Funk, Ray Charles is The Flashpoint of Soul. Does anybody know how he died? ` [This message was edited Thu Jun 10 14:37:32 2004 by Supernova] This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

Does anybody know how he died? You're welcome Supernova. The reports I've read say he died due to complications with liver disease. I'm glad I found that article, because I feel like such a neener-head for not having his cds or knowing more about his life. Still, I was saddened by the news. Now reading this article gives me more insight into his life and I can't wait to see that movie about him that's coming out in October. very sad to hear this. I only recently discovered his music and he always struck me as a true artist and a wonderful performer. He'll be missed. It was not in vain...it was in Minneapolis!

Brother Ray was a real musical icon who made you feel the power of his convictions through his phenomenal voice! I loved him ever since I was 3 years old! Even at that age, his warm voice which was intermixed with heartbreak moved me! Others who sang with him were either complimented or overshadowed by his powerful voice! He will join the greatest orchestra in Heaven. My condolescences go to his family. May you rest in peace Brother Ray! Lennytunia

Kissmequick said: I will always associate my Grandmother with Ray. She told me how she went to his show when she was in her late 20's and ran down to the stage and plopped herself on his piano! The crowd loved it. She said he asked her what she looked liked and her response was "feel for yourself" - and he felt her face and told her she was fine. "I was the talk of the town!" she would say. HA! Go Grandma with your bad self! Now they are both in heaven and I hope she get's another turn on the piano Much love and Godspeed to a great man. [This message was edited Thu Jun 10 13:26:26 2004 by Kissmequick] What a wonderful story. What a wonderful man. That cat had so much life and verve, it was unreal. A legend in the very truest sense of the word. His music could inspire such joy, I always marvelled at Ray & Ella in particular - u were just drawn 2 them - I guess that's what they mean when they say: 'magnestism' huh. His smile was infectious, and although I never had the good fortune 2 see him live, I would bet my bottom dollar that if u looked around the room at any Ray Charles gig, u would see everybody smiling back. Like his music, his personality was infectious. What a truly wonderful life he led, what a truly wonderful legacy he has left us 2 cherish. Sadly missed. Thanku, and God speed Mr Charles. kisscamille said: Oh my God, this is sad news. I've never seen him perform live and I always meant to but never did. I guess this just re-enforces the fact that everyone is getting older and if you really want to see someone before they pass, you better do it before it's too late.
Rest in Peace Mr. Charles. I've been saying that exact thing about Ray for the last few years. I haven't seen Brother Ray in about 4 years, and have been missing him when he's been in town. The first time I saw him was on my birthday, 10 years ago yesterday. This is such a major drag. I can't imagine not having him around anymore. Dizzy Gillespie died about 5 months before I was going to see him play. I managed to see Celia Cruz about a year before she died. Get out and see the musical legends while you can.. Here's a CNN Article about Brother Ray. http://www.cnn.co cracknbush

Rest in Peace Mr. Charles. How sad to see another legend pass. I saw the article in Vanity Fair a couple of months ago about the movie they are making on Ray Charles' life starring Jamie Foxx. In the picture they showed he looked exactly like the young Ray - I hope the movie does him justice. [This message was edited Thu Jun 10 17:25:13 2004 by MarianneD]

[This message was edited Thu Jun 10 15:33:10 2004 by VinaBlue] I think most of us have been neener heads when it comes to somebody's work we should have checked out before their passing. I have yet to get to know Nina Simone's work. But yes, Ray is mighty essential to any music connoisseur, musician, or any serious music fan's attention. May he rest in peace. Ray Charles IS music. Period!
His use of space and silence in a composition has been a great influence on Prince. Ray was a true musical genius and he will be sorely missed. RIP Ray

That pretty much sums it up. RIP Ray. Amen. He was a most accomplished musician who took blues, soul and jazz and helped forge R & B as we know it. Behind the sunglasses and the smile was an undispyuted legend. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

MorehouseMan said: Huge loss. To me the term "genius" these days is used to loosely and applied to too many performers. The term is more than fitting for Mr. Ray Charles.
Absolutely. An unbelievable vocalist, with the power to convey raw emotion like few others. And a multi-instrumentalist who played by touch and feeling. Not to mention everything he accomplished with every single one of the odds stacked against him. They don't make 'em like Mr. Charles anymore. Here's to no more pain. The Normal Whores Club

Ray can now see again. He is bathed in onyx light, from the holy reaches of space. Angels rain down garland upon the golden streets. Ray is looking at a tree, contemplating the music in the roots. There is magic in the sing song of the majestic skys, as Ray goes up the purple stair, and disappears beyond the dawn into glory.

I love the duet he did with Chaka khan on Quincy's "Back on the block" album called "I'll be good to you"
Also great in Blues brothers movie! Remember that? I know my above 2 reasons dont make me a proper fan, but I know he is hugely repected and loved! "I'll give it up with my credit card...." - "I'll be good to you" with Chaka khan
