Yeah, I know this has been available as an import for a long time, but it finally came out domestically over here in the states (complete with a domestic price tag, thank you VERY much), and while I'm glad I waited to pay a cheeper price (the dang album's less than 40 minutes!), I'm really glad I bought it.



For those'a youse who don't know who she is, she was the chanteuse on the first few Tricky albums - most notably, on Maxinquaye - and now she's gone solo. (I'm sure all you Trickyheads out there can probably provide better info, but that's what I know.)

This woman has a fabulous voice - soulful, spare and minimal, and a little bit sinister in places. It's so nice to hear something with a lot of soul that's not drenched in melisma and sappy overproduction...though in places, the album can sound a bit like a Tricky-wannabe production (viva la Trip-Hop?).

The title track's gotta be one of the most beautiful songs I've heard in quite some time, and there's so much variety on this album, especially considering how short it is, it's great short-attention-span listening.

Anyone else digging this?

Didn't even know it was out...I will have to look for this. For me...tricky's stuff went down after they broke up and he no longer used her. They complimented each other perfectly at times. Always wondered what happened to ms topley-bird.

So it's good?...sounds like it's a bit all over the place.

Yeah, it's all over the place, but in the best possible way. There's certainly a common vibe that ties everything together, but it goes from trip-hop to glam to electronica-lite to whateverama and back again. I think the whole thing is very agreeable as a whole. I dig it.

Wasn't this called "Quixotic" in the UK with a different album cover?

I love her. One of my all-time favorite singers. I didn't even know who she (or Tricky) was when I first saw her live.

She just closes her eyes and goes off into her own little world while singing. And she always takes me there.

I really miss her in Tricky's music. She was clearly his muse cuz he hasn't been the same since. Not that he's nothing without her, cuz "Juxtapose" was my shit. But I'd say it's 1/3 Tricky, 1/3 the music and 1/3 Martina when it comes to the magic of his sound. Something feels sorely missing.

I have "Quixotic" but saved it for a rainy day. So much new stuff was coming out when I got it that it kinda passed me by. But reading this makes me think it's time to dust it off.
