Who Had the Tightest Horn Section?

Which group do y'all think had the tightest horn section?

Earth Wind and Fire

Tower Of Power

Kool and The Gang

Chicago

Fred Wesley/ Maceo with P-Funk

Fred Wesley/ Maceo with James Brown

Blood Sweat and Tears

Ohio Players

The Seawind Horns

Prince with the Hornheadz

Prince with Eric Leeds/Matt Blistan

Prince with Maceo/Greg Boyer/Candy Dulfer

Or a group not listed here?

Slave2daGroove

Tower of Power - sheer quantity of horns

Maceo and all the Kings Men - just for the tightness of the groove

Tie between EW&F (who had more elaborate orchestration with their horn arrangements) and The J.B.'s with their funky interpretation of horns. I would also throw in there Eric and Atlanta's horn parts Prince arranged for The Revolution/Lovesexy bands. thumbs up!

They're all good but i've gotta go with TOP.
The bridge section and the counterpoint happening at the outro of Soul Vaccination...hmmm.

Those are the ones, but pre-'80s Chicago.
Then there's Miles' group with Trane and Cannonball.
This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

wink Yeah, I think I lean towards Tower of Power because of the fullness of the horn section, and you got Doc Kupka holdin' down the low end on Baritone Sax, and it blends so well with the 'tight as a gnat's ass' rhythm section....

The JB's had the tightest horn section ever!!! (They all copied their riffs)

Maceo, Kush, Rick and Fred were superior when theyed played in Bootsy's Rubberband and Parliament. Once again taking the blowing to new heights.

The Phoenix Horns(EWF) were the shit also. Classic hooks!

Bennie, Greg Thomas and Boyer (P-Funk Horns) are incredible.

SO I WILL SAY JAMES BROWN, PARLIAMENT AND EARTH WIND & FIRE HAD THE GREATEST HORN SECTIONS OF ANY BLACK ACT OF ALL TIMES.

Nuff said! lol

Jerry Hey, Larry Williams and Kim Hutchcroft. They were originally part of a popjazz group called Seawind, but are probably better known for all their session work, especially with Quincy Jones and Michael Jackson (also Brothers Johnson, Al Jarreau, Sister sledge, Toto, Alphonse Mouzon, etc.)

Man,this a hard one.EW& F are just simply brilliant! Jb's horns were more essential to his grooves.I mean, some of his grooves wouldn't even be finished without the horn interlocking. I'm not sure if I'm making sense, but I feel Jb's horns were more important to him and to the future of music after his heyday. EW&f's horns were just..creamy.

And the Hornheadz are tight.I have a copy of their cd and they are tight. But I think all of these horn sections listed are incredible!

Whoa. EWF horns were tight as hell. But I'm gonna give this honor to TOP. Overall, I think they had the tightest section. They played louder than the rest of them. Every note and every turnaround were razor sharp on studio and live recordings.

Earth Wind and Fire "tight" may be inappropriate here because many avant-garde jazz elements were used to extend grooves

Tower Of Power "tight" with a lot of depth very rare for solos used to ovettake the song

Kool and The Gang "tight" and very jazzy, but too short-lived

Chicago not "tight", but certainly not uptight; introduced a lot of jazz textures into rock where a "tight horn section is more a thing of r&b

Fred Wesley/ Maceo with P-Funk certainly "tight", but like EW&F many avant-garde jazz elements were used to extend grooves

Fred Wesley/ Maceo with James Brown can't get no tighter than this; that's why Bootsy snagged 'em for PFUNK

Blood Sweat and Tears like Chicago they brought a lot of jazz textures to rock, but that's not quite the place to go for "tight"

Ohio Players pretty damn "tight", but that's all studio; unfortunately OP is criminally under-recorded as a live band

The Seawind Horns very smooth some times light, but they're great nonetheless

Prince with the Hornheadz
Prince with Eric Leeds/Matt Blistan
Prince with Maceo/Greg Boyer/Candy Dulfer all are "cool" and tight, but largely reminiscent of EWF, PFUNK and JBs

Or a group not listed here?

There are also UPTOWN HORNS who are used in Texas blues.
MEMPHIS HORNS on Stax (tight and compact; prolly the best next to JBs and the inspiration for TOP). There are quite few, to be honest
