Missy Elliott worst show I have ever seen.

Just thought I'd warn any fans of Missy Elliott out there.....she puts on a TERRIBLE live show.

I saw her last night in Sydney and it was the WORST CONCERT PERFORMANCE I HAVE EVER WASTED MY HARD-EARNED $90 ON!

Rap/Hip Hop music ALWAYS SUCKS when there is no LIVE BAND. Take The Roots....they sound GREAT because they play instruments and have some sense of musicianship and WHAT SOUNDS GOOD! But when will r&b performers realise that what sounds good on record doesn't always work live? Because it is LIVE, you need LIVE players for it to FEEL LIVE! Plus, anyone with any taste is REALLY SICK of backing tracks for the backup vocals! I really like Missy on record, but LIVE she spent more time talking than singing/rapping and the dancers totally overshadowed any of the so-called songs, which themselves were in a medley format giving each "hit" only about 30-secs or a minute each! The whole show itself was VERY SHORT and consisted of a whole lot of YELLING to backing tracks and crappy scratching from the DJ. I mean COME ON!

She also talked about how we should "buy her shit" meaning her line of Adidas clothing....I mean talk about Product Placement! Sickening materialistic. On top of that she just sounded ignorant talking about "are there any ghettos in Australia?". It made it worse that the mostly teeny-bopper crowd didn't really know the answer and just screamed back (for those who don't know, the answer is no, we don't have any real ghettos here in OZ). I felt really embarrassed to be there and my three friends who were with me, who also like Missy on record, thought the show totally sucked, too.

I feel really sorry for young kids who think THIS it was a good show! Shit, seeing Prince last year at the same venue and was the best gig I have ever seen because he spent more time on the music with REAL MUSICIANS playing their arses off! Missy has gone WAY DOWN in my book...WORST act I've ever seen (so-called) live, for sure. Not worth the paper the ticket was printed on.

The only slight saving grace was the dancers, but I DIDN'T PAY $90 for them....I paid that much cause I wanted to HEAR some good MUSIC....not see a fucken dance class.

Very disappointed.

I love Missy too, however alarm bells have gotta sound when the ticket prices are from $90 up and they promote the shows as "with over 20 dancers / Dj's, etc" plus support acts. Right there u know that she can't hold it down on her own (live) and somehow the illusion is quantity over quality.

I love hip hop and I go way back ol skool, but nothing disappoints me more than so called "live" hip hop. Most of the time the music is played direct from DAT with a "DJ" pretending to be playing from the decks (and if they really do play live from turntables, usually they can't mix 4 shit) while whole troupes of rappers and their crew walk back and forth on stage with a mic and a towel. Most times they can't even spit a complete verse without their crew finishing it for them while they take a breath for the next line. It's so painful to watch.
And then u got the divided crowd of loyalists and true hip hop headz with underage top 40 school kids who only know the hits who pass themselves off as die hardz who have no idea what they're on about, makes it an all round unenjoyable experience.

I love Missy, I think she's a great producer and Timberland is awesome as well, but there is no way I'd go and see her live. The only hip hop tour I've really enjoyed live was Naughty By Nature's first Australian tour of '96

Are there any ghettos in Australia? evillol What a joke. I'd bet if the promoter gave her a choice of going back to her hotel room or spending a few hours in Redfern after the show, she'd bitch out back to the hotel room, Missy has a nerve saying such an off the cuff remark like that

You've totally echoed my thoughts, Anthony (playa).

Your desciption of the crowd was spot-on! I felt so out of place...it was mainly young, tarty-looking girls who just wanted to dance to a beat....and that's fine for them I guess, but I look for more than that when I pay $90 for a show!

I actually didn't plan on going to this show, but at the last minute someone had a spare ticket. I should have gone with my first instinct, which was that it would suck, but I spose no one else was going to take the ticket and I wanted to give Missy the benefit of the doubt...but the show was seriously awful, non-musical and I will never attempt to watch a hip hop show again unless there is a live band, a la The Roots.

.

I love Missy on album, but I've yet to see a live performance by her on television that doesn't suck. Some people just don't need to take it on stage, and she's one of 'em. She doesn't flow well live, she doesn't know how to control her breath or her voice with her movement, she doesn't have much stage presence (she ain't much without all those video special effects) and there's absolutely zero consideration for musicianship - even with having a decent rapport with a DJ who can treat the turntables like a musical instrument. This isn't to say I don't think she's talented, because I think she really is. Just not the stuff of live performance.

No surprise to me either. I wouldn't waste one cent on her shit, let alone $$$ for a live concert.

i have to say that i agree. missy is very talented and intelligent but that doesn't mean she's good at everything. i always felt that she's a producer/creator first and a performer second. or maybe even third.

Everytime she performed on tv live it was bad so i wouldntve been surprised! smile Her music is dope though, but rappers really should not perform live without a band.

that's good to hear. I was considering complaining to the promoter, but I can't be bothered now...glad to know she's not getting away with it.

it's amazing how many young kids loved the show though...check her official website and the boards there and all you see is praise, with one or two people like me showing their distaste.

One of the best shows I ever saw, period, was the set A Tribe Called Quest did on the Public Enemy "Apocalypse '91" tour. It was a show with great rhymes, energy, and connection with the crowd. Rap has become so mainstream now, and the MCs almost contemptuous of their audience, that you're not gonna find many great performers.

That's Aussie money, so it's a little over half the value of the US $.

Still, way too much for a shit show.

Missy has always been and always will be a horrid performer. She has no stage presence and every 5 minutes she is cursing up a storm to "buy her shit."

She should never tour and just put out records.

You know something's sad, when her dancers are the best part of her show.

yeah, well i saw the ladies first tour here in gboro, nc and i don't know if i was completely displeased, but you're right, as a musician myself, i would have to say that the musical aspect is always disappointing at rap shows/ cause i was also at the lil jon/ 50 cent show and i'd have to say the same thing about it, of course/

I'M READY FOR A MUSICAL REVOLUTION, VERY SOON!! MY MUSIC PROFESSORS DID NOT WARN ME OF THE AMAZING AMOUNT OF BULLSHIT OUT THERE TO CONTEND WITH! (PROBABLY SHOULD HAVE KNOWN THOUGH) sad mad

I don't think she's comfortable performing live, and I don't think she really cares about improving her live performance. I think she just does it because she has to, or she feels that she has to. I wish she wouldn't.
