Dare i say it, Jackso's take on the beatles "Come together"!

His version is tougher, slicker and quicker! Plus it is funkier!

Most covers of Beatles songs. The boys were songwriters first, and I love hearing talented musicians' takes on the Fab Four's work.

I posted these on the other cover song thread:

Siouxsie And The Banshees - The Passenger
1000 Homo DJs - Supernaut
Bananarama - Venus
Janet Jackson - One More Chance
Tori Amos - Strange Little Girl
Sinead O'Connor - Nothing Compares 2 U

And I changed my mind about Type O Negative's remake of Cinnamon Girl. I do like it better than the original.

"Train Kept A Rollin'" by Aerosmith

The original done by the Yardbirds is a little disconjointed.

"You've got a friend" - Donnie Hathaway

The original was so 70's folky I could never get into it.

"Pretty Woman" by Van Halen

I'm not sure whether its the song or the intro called "intruder" that makes this a great cover. Roy Orbison was the man but VH just turned it up a notch

I like Grace Jones' version of "Warm Leatherette" more than I like the original version.

Omigod, The Normal's "Warm Leatherette" is classic postpunk! Grace's was clever, but the original kicks ass. I do like Grace's "Demolition Man" a lot. It was the first version I ever heard so I liked it the best.

I prefer the original Randy sung version (from the jacksons "Victory" album)! It's beutiful, makes me feel very sad! Should of been a single!

I sold my 'Victory' album a long time ago, but from what I remember I wasn't too moved by Randy's. Janet's is a lot groovier and the chorus is almost hypnotic with all the multi-tracked vocals. If I still had 'Victory' I'd give the original verison a spin to see if it still sounded the same all these years later, but it's gone.

Don't get me wrong - I like The Normal's version - it's nice and cold and harsh. But to me, Grace's version is nice and cold and harsh and FUNKY. Those albums Grace did with Sly and Robbie are just the best to me, though...

nod JB managed to take songs and completely give them his own spin (usually more haunting than the originals). Even his version of a track by a band i really dig (the smiths) - i know it's over - is downright brilliant.

The ones that pop into my mind:

The Supremes - "This Old Heart Of Mine (Is Weak For You)" (Isley Brothers)
Bette Midler - "The Wind Beneath My Wings" (Sheena Easton)
Tammi Terrell - "Come On And See Me" (The Supremes)
Blondie - "Denis" (cover of "Denise" by Randy & The Rainbows, with the gender changed)
Joan Jett & The Blackhearts - "Crimson & Clover" (Tommy James & The Shondells)
Boy George - "Everything I Own" (Bread)
Brenda Holloway - "When I'm Gone" (Mary Wells)
Cathy Dennis - "Touch Me (All Night Long)" (Fonda Rae)
Cyndi Lauper - "I Drove All Night" (Roy Orbison) (a great cover, forgotten today; her most alluring vocals, and a propulsive beat not present in the original)
Cyndi Lauper - "Money Changes Everything" (The Brains)
The Flying Lizards - "Money" (many Motown artists)
George Michael & Lisa Stansfield (+ Queen) - "Those Were The Days Of Our Lives" (Live at Wembley) (Queen)
Paul Young - "Everytime You Go Away" (Hall & Oates)
Kim Carnes - "Bette Davis Eyes" (Jackie DeShannon)
Naked Eyes - "(There's) Always Something There To Remind Me" (Bacharach et. all; it was cheesy to begin with, but this version revels in it, which makes it more enjoyable IMHO)
Aretha Franklin - "Respect" (Otis Redding)
The Hollies - "I Can't Let Go" (Evie Sands)
Tina Turner - "Let's Stay Together" (Al Green)
Blondie - "Hanging On The Telephone" (The Nerves)

I think Aretha Franklin's version of "Until You Come Back To Me (That's What I'm Gonna Do)" kills Stevie Wonder's original version. I think you could say the same about many of the songs she covered.

I like Guns N Roses take on "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" much better than Bob Dylan's original.

Joe Cocker obviously made "With A Little Help From My Friends" much better than the Beatles version.

I like Donny Hathaway's slightly funky version of "Jealous Guy" better than John Lennon's original.

I love Blur's take on Rod Stewart's "Maggie May". I don't know if it's better but it sure is different.

I love what Marilyn Manson did with The Ramones' "The KKK Took My Baby Away". Very nice job.

Sorry, can't think right now. I know there are many more.

Guns 'n Roses "Sympathy for the Devil". The Stones version rocked, but the GnR version was just *that* much better.
